After reports appeared that China had offered to consider renaming the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to meet Indian concerns, the sentence referring to the proposal has disappeared from Ambassador Luo Zhaohui’s speech on the Chinese embassy website.

On Monday, The Wire first published a report on the proposal made by the Chinese envoy to India in a speech made to the United Service Institution on May 5.

China had been recently stepped it’s up efforts to persuade India and Indian public opinion to join the Belt-Road Initiative summit in Beijing on May 14-15, which was to be attended by nearly 28 heads of state. With that background, Luo’s speech had dwelled largely on the benefits for India to join its flagship strategic initiative.

India’s concerns about CPEC – which is a key part of Beijing’s One Belt, One Road (OBOR) Initiative – has been fuelled by the route of the corridor which starts in Gilgit-Baltistan, a part of Kashmir that been under Pakistani occupation.

Asserting that CPEC is only for promoting economic cooperation and would have no impact on sovereignty issues, Luo had tried to sweeten the deal for India, at least, cosmetically. “Even we can think about renaming the CPEC,” he said. This was the first time ever that a Chinese official had publicly talked of re-naming $51 billion CPEC project, which Islamabad views as a “gamechanger” and a guarantee against being isolated even if the West ratchets up economic pressure to stop its support for certain terror groups.

The text of the article had been first posted on the website of the Chinese embassy on Sunday. A screenshot of the relevant paragraph was tweeted by this correspondent at 11.54 pm on May 7 with the relevant sentence, highlighted.

Following The Wire’s report on the morning of May 8, other publications also reported the offer including PTI, India Today and ANI.

However, when the embassy website page for the speech was checked again on May 8 evening, the eight-word sentence was missing. The rest of the 2900 plus words of the speech were intact.

The Wire has confirmed from attendees of the speech at USI that the Chinese envoy had largely read out from a text for his speech, in which he had said that Beijing could look into changing the nomenclature of CPEC.

A retired Indian diplomat, who was part of the audience, said that Luo’s proposal certainly did not seem like a passing whim. “The re-naming suggestion was flagged several times. It was mentioned at least four times by him during the discussion, including as part of the speech,” he said.

Luo, who is highly regarded as a career diplomat, is apparently part of a rare breed in the Chinese foreign service who identify themselves as an ‘India-hand’. During his talk, which went on more than two hours, Luo noted that his baptism as a junior diplomat began with his witnessing the historic visit by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to China in 1988.

During his tenure at Chinese foreign office’s counter terrorism department, Luo had helped to restart the stalled India-China bilateral working group on terrorism, which had met rather frequently in 2011 and 2012, according to the retired Indian diplomat. This dialogue process had ensured that India participated as an observer at China’s counter-terror exercise in its restive Xinjiang province in 2012.

Having spent some time in New Delhi in the initial part of his diplomatic life, Luo also proudly recounts that his wife, Jiang Yili is the first Chinese national to obtain a doctorate from Delhi University.

The mystery of the ‘missing proposal’, made at a closed door event, could perhaps have been to test the waters carefully – and perhaps, withdrawn after there was not a great reception from the Indian side. It was also suggested that the choice of USI, rather than other private think-tanks, as the venue to make this offer was significant.

There had been no official comment made during by the Indian government on the Chinese officer.

Another theory is that the proposal could have been removed after a rap on the knuckles from Beijing, with the suggestion being that it was an entirely an initiative from Luo.

The Wire was not able to obtain an explanation from the Chinese embassy for the redaction of the ambassador’s speech till the time of of publication.

Taken out of context and turned in to fake news by Indian media, bravo

Seriously, recently i've been noticing plenty of so-called Chinese say this do that to India news, however i've a hard time to find out where does most of them came from, majority of them came from the opinion section that should not even considered to be China's official news
For example for today, "People Daily" official media of PRC, i simply failed to find anything thats closed to the OP news

Indian news you just pay the news agency and they will write whatever you want.
But I am hating the CCP recently for offering India to join CPEC. I think CPC should change its name first.

I'm waiting for Chinese official statement before making any comment, seem like Indians are excited for this rumor  but China rename India is a matter of fact:p:, It's plain stupid to change CPEC because of India's concern.

Renaming might help.

For example, if it is renamed as may I suggest ChIP (China-Indian-Pakistan) then it means the status of Kashmir between China-Indian-Pakistan would no longer an issue as all three would continue interpreting their current positions until final resolution.

Lol India contribute nothing to this corridor and want CPEC to be renamed...LMAO.

what kind of yellow journalism is that but anyway in the nutshell no matter what india in any way is not going to be part of any China OBOR projects or CEPC not now and not in future no matter how much China wants India to be but thanks but no thanks .. period and this is from the highest circels in south block new delhi .... period

How important India in OBOR equation? China offer India to take part of this project just to prove that we did not exclude India and the choice is your, China certainly not twist India's arm for that.

If war breaks out in between Pak v India, they just know the first lot of infrastructure to be targeted is the CPEC link in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, looks like the Chinese are feeling the heat or they want to protect their 40 odd billion investment at any cost. The already reiterated they will not come between the dispute between the 2 and cant take their words back. sticky situation!

Introspection time for Pakistani's is the all whether ally ready to give up and leave them high and dry?

Lol if the war broken, it will cost more than the price of CPEC project to India for this war and certainly China will help Pakistan to protect this trade route by any mean, don't think India is US...you don't have overwhelming advantage over Pakistan. India sure will get a lot of heat if China stand to protect our trade road.

.
All this time India has been terrorizing the civilians of Baluchistan and other parts of pakistan because they didn't like the naming convention of CPEC?

.
I dont get it.
Pakistan and china say CPEC is a bilateral thing, and yet china is hell bent to get india included into it. To the extent that they offer to rename it.
Why ?
We dont want to join, you both should just go ahead.
Why keep pursuing india ?

I have never heard any new that China is officially begging India to join CPEC or OBOR beside making some offer and that's about it, but I do see a lot of India's complain about CPEC and Indian official put negative comment on OBOR ...LMAO . Only India's media like to made emotive and sensational fabrication such as China keep insisting India to join.

China willing to rename China Pakistan Economic Corridor to appease India

New Delhi: After offering to mediate between Indian and Pakistan, China has now expressed its willingness to change the name of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to assuage India's concerns about the project.

India has been against the CPEC on the ground that it passes through Azad Kashmir (Azad Kashmir) – an area that is an integral part of India but is now under illegal occupation by Pakistan.

Propaganda paid for by the Indian Government? Whether you name it the Milky Way, or "the highway" or the CPEC...it is a part of China's OBOR initiative. It is a sub project of that overall program. Renaming it to anything else, doesn't do anything to Pakistan. Pakistan will still make billions off it and will progress very fast into the 21st century through it.

I have said it a while ago on here that India, sooner or later, will have to join this project. The upset-girl attitude is only a dramatic show like everything else we see. Now they are getting ready to join it so this media campaign is their way to "clear the path" with respect to the name. They tried their best but couldn't derail it. Now sadly......joining it :angel:

.
“The CPEC is for promoting economic cooperation and connectivity. It has no connections to or impact on sovereignty issues. Even we can think about renaming the CPEC,” Mr. Luo said

Contacted by The Hindu, the MEA (Ministry of External Affair)did not respond to the ambassador’s comments.

Well said, India just want to have some face saving because CPEC is about to marginalized India and OBOR will completely put India into isolation: South east Asian countries and most South Asian nations such Nepal, Sri-Lanka and Pakistan ...are in favor of China's initiative so India need to make a lot of noise to get attention and insist that China is begging them to join so when they join ...they then can claim that China is begging them .

on our media, we only talk about the CPEC progress and how this corridor will bring prosperity of China and Pakistan and made no mention of India

India never asked it to be renamed. It was Chinese ambassador Mr. Luo who made that suggestion and later retracted it after getting heat from Pakistan.

When Pakistan has China by the B@!!s, why did China suggest it to India in the first place?

The Chinese ambassador should have taken permission from Pakistan before suggesting.

Hopefully he would be more careful going forward lest he could loose his job.

Very good article to read. Mao and his CPC comrades have been demonized by both West and the domestic "liberal" intellectuals, and their unprecedented achievements in a country that had been plagued with wars, starvation, illiteracy, diseases, superstitions, and extreme poverty for hundreds of years, have been systematically belittled and intentionally ignored.

Being one of the greatest leaders in 20th century, Deng Xiaoping could never have achieved in India what he achieved in China. Deng's great achievement was largely built upon the foundation that Mao and his comrades had laid decades earlier.

China is influencing the entire world with her OBOR initiative, and will never be bothered with issues like how sacred an animal should be.

lol I was replying to your suggestion to rename it as ChIP. Sure our ambassador entitle to his suggestion but the majority of Chinese and even government official are against it, no one like to rename this CPEC cool name just to please India...LMAO...our ambassador did a fine job to listen Indian's complain over and over this CPEC and make emotive suggestion we can understand he's position :agree:

Here another video to show Chinese and Pakistani work hand on hand over power generator, it doesn't matter if this video is in Chinese, just look how complex and how smooth we're working. Both nations are determinate to bring CPEC as successful project.

India knew that it will be isolated for not take part of OBOR that's why it made a lot of noise to get attention, such as playing Dalai Lama card as tit for tat against CPEC and hope that China back down to their demand and worst China got India renamed and India will keep invent subject to get attention.

Chabahar way to access to Afghanistan is just a joke of 21st century, Indian government knew that and why they're dragging their feet over this project but when India realize that they can't compete against CPEC, they use complain tactic trying to kill this project...it's an epic fail thinking.

I have mentioned ChIP as an example to elaborate to the members who were lost on significance of the suggestion made by the Chinese ambassador.

India is in the middle of the India Ocean and has direct sea route access to Persian Gulf, GCC and Africa. India does not need OBOR.

On the other hand China is on the far east of asia open to Pacific ocean only. China needs OBOR to access Persian Gulf, GCC and Africa as practically it is a land locked country on its western front. China needs Iran, Pakistan, Myanmar, Thailand or Malaysia+ Indonesia + Singapore on its side to get entry into Indian ocean.
