Advising China to act responsibly, former US Deputy Secretary of States James Steinberg today said Beijing should understand that it will not benefit from confrontation with its neighbours, like India and Japan.

He said Chinese leadership should introspect on their future strategy and the country should act responsibly given its huge economic and military capabilities.

"I don't know what the Chinese leadership is up to... confronting India and Japan, especially when they have been trying to build strong bilateral relations...The Chinese leadership must understand, it will not benefit them in the long run. The leadership must introspect on their future strategies," Steinberg told PTI.

He was responding to questions on how he viewed the recent Chinese provocations with India in Ladakh and with Japan in South China Sea.

He said China should make it clear what their long time intentions are and it should assure its neighbours about that.

Steinberg, presently the Dean of the Maxwell School, Syracuse University and University Professor of Social Science, International Affairs and Law, served as Deputy Secretary of State, and acted as the principal Deputy to Secretary Hillary Clinton.

He also served as Deputy National Security Advisor to former US President Clinton from 1996 to 2000.

Exactly!

I just don't understand What will china gain by this ladakh incursion, our relationships with china were going northwords , in fact, first foreign trip of china's new PM will going to be INDIA (20th may), and now even this visits may get cancelled if tension escalate, i just can;t see china gaining anything out from this current incursion, just nothing because they are not going to stay permanently in these tents, they eventually have to leave this place, either by themselves or forcefully.

Chinese are themselves pushing its neighbors to join US camp.

They are either going senile or the supa powaa cr@p has gone to their heads, they think they can take on multiple countries all at once.

Even their allies are not sure what the chinese are upto with each stunt they pull. Hitler and nazism seems to have taken root.

I have to agree. Pushing India (or any other neighbours) towards the west (USA) will not help Chinas ambitions.

i already said this before.... it was a stupid move and now china trapped. If they war they loose. If they back off its like running away.... That was indeed a stupid move and this shows the chinese thinking. They just knows how to copy.... However you cant copy war.... China thinks short term. India thinks long term.... Just wait and watch how china backs off. America-japan-india the most powerful combination in every aspect. Be it population, be it GDP, be it military power.... China made a stupid idiotic move and now it exposed china which will only make india strong and in coming months india will focus alot more towards indo-china border. When u cant think long term you cant be super power. Not even regional power....

oh yeh, the writer of this article is a prophet of their god, he knows the out come of the future, and try lecture others what they should do what should not.

Our neighbours are already vassal states of the Yankees. So whatever we do is irrelevant whether those countries are slaves of the Yankees. Once you get in bed with the Yankees, its very difficult to do anything that goes against the Yankees. One of the worst decisions we did was to ever get on the 'good side' of the Yankees ever since Deng. We have lost alot of our foreign policy independence since then because our leaders have been trying to play nice with the Yankees. India will most probably give military bases to Yankees to contain us just like what other vassal states like Japan and South Korea have done.
We will never sacrifice our territory for some useless neighbourly friendliness. It's always been our way, it will always be our way.

how does this stupid guy know that china "will not benefit them in the long run"?

The Title is misleading it should be "China will not benefit from confrontation with india : James Steinberg [Former US Deputy Secretary of States] "

Its not Official Stand of United States Government.

Why would the US Government make an official stand?

We get that sort of prophecy often from the Chinese officials, turnabout is fair play.

United States should have listened when tens of millions of people all over the world were marching against invading Iraq.

American advice debunked (precious words for Indians though).
