China will deploy the world first exascale supercomputer in 2017-2018, that will be 4-years earlier than the nearest competitor in the rest world.

And 4 years in the world of IT is like centuries.

There are at least three exascale (means over 1000Pflops, 10x faster than today's fastest supercomputer) supercomputer system are under-development in China:

(1)China Academcy of Sciences's tech spinoff: Sugon
(2)Jiang-Nan (The one who developed the world fastest supercomputer now): ShenWei
(3)NUDT (The one who developed the world second-fastest supercomputer now): Tianhe-3/Exascale?

All will use fully domestic-made computing device (CPU/Accerlator).

All three systems are under prototyping phase.

All systems are expected to be online before 2019, all will be ahead of any other exascale supercomputing developed in the rest world (China's nearest competitior will field a exascale supercomputer in 2021 in the US).

And NUDT's Tianhe Exascale is the first exascale China will field, it is expected to be online by either the end of 2017 or early 2018.

NUDT's exascale computer will field an accerlator that offer a performance of 60Gflops/watt on a 14nm node process, this is a very impressive number, especially comparing to:

Intel's current fastest accerlator,Xeon-Phi 200 series KNL's performance is 10Gflops/watt on a 14nm node process

Nvidia's current fastest accerlator, Pascal Tesla P100's performance is 16-17Gflops/watt on a 16nm node process

Nvidia's next generation accerlator, Volta's performance is expected to be 25-30Gflops/watt on a 7nm node process or 20Gflops/watt on a refined 16nm node process.

So China's exascale supercomputer will be not only much faster but also far more energy-efficient.

China is working on not one but three e-scale HPC at the same time? It is interesting to see how many Chinese HPCs will be on Top-500 by the end of 2018. It's likely to take the Top 1-5 spots.
