So, basically US uses Destroyers + Cruisers for AC protection and they have 65 destroyers & 27 Cruisers. So, in total US have 90+ vessels available for AC battle groups.
However China don't have any Cruisers so it needs to fill up that gap with 055 for the time being. 20+ for Destroyer Commands and 20+ for AC Battle groups. Now I think it would be clear why China needs 50 type 055

50 Units Type 055 would be too much ,that will cost China up to 90 billions USD,really a lot of moneys!!
Considering China is still building its own aircraft carriers which will cost China 20 billions each where aircraft prices inclued （which means 120 to 150 billions for 6 in total）,in the near future,i think Type 055 total number will not be limited at 24 to 36!

it defines its own class, only Arleigh Burke III can match 055's fire power to some extent```due to budget issue, they scraped dual bands AESA radar system like the one 055 has, instead they planned to put a watered down AMDR radar system```
