why are china and turkey at odds/ have a strained relationship... its odd, what issues do they have against each other

There are no real issues between China and Turkey.
The only thing I can think of, is that Erdogan made some controversial comments after the Xinjiang ethnic riots. The riots, in which the vast majority of casualties were Han Chinese.
But it doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. China-Turkey cooperation is currently very positive, and increasing every day.
