Within seven years, China will be able to control the Second Island Chain — a series of island groups that runs north to south from the Japanese archipelago to the Bonin and Marshall islands — now that the PLA Navy commands the nation's first aircraft carrier, according to the Hangzhou-based Qianjiang Evening News.
The PLA Navy has yet to break through the First Island Chain, extending from the Aleutians to the Philippines, because of the strong US military presence in the Far East. In addition, key allies of the US in northeast Asia, including Japan and South Korea, also play central roles in containing China. Not only to do they have a strong military force of their own, but Seoul and Tokyo also provide air, naval, logistic and supply bases to the US.
By controlling the La Perouse Strait, Tsugaru Strait and Tsushima Strait, the US Pacific Command is not only be able to react to a North Korean attack quickly by concentrating its ground force on the Korean peninsula, but it can also defend Guam, its main air and naval base in the Western Pacific, from any potential attack.
There are currently 150,000 US military personnel in the Asia Pacific theatre. Among them are 50,000 army, 39,000 air force and 60,000 navy personnel.
In 1982, admiral Liu Huaqing, the former commander of the PLA Navy and the mastermind of China's modern naval strategy, said that it would be necessary for China to control the First and Second Island Chains by 2010 and 2020. The PLA Navy must be ready to challenge US domination over the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean in 2040. If China is able to dominate the Second Island Chain seven years from now, the East China Sea will become the backyard of the PLA Navy.
