China will assist Bangladesh in building the second runway and third terminal of Hajrat Shah Jalal International Airport, a civil aviation ministry official said on Wednesday.
He said the state-linked Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) will soon appoint a consultant to carry out the feasibility study for the airport facilities.
Last month, a Chinese delegation led by Vice-Minister for Transport Feng Zhenglin had met with the Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan to discuss on how China could help Bangladesh expand the airport, the country's biggest.
"We will build the extension work of terminal and runway with the cooperation from China. The construction work will be done on the government to government basis," Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan told the FE.
He said that an expert committee of China will soon start working on it.
During the meeting, the Chinese minister also assured the Bangladesh government of helping all out cooperation in building a modern airport within 50 kilometre radius of the capital Dhaka.
Mr Khan said apart from constructing the runway and terminal, the Chinese government has also agreed to upgrade Cox's Bazar airport as international airport.
"A contract has been signed with a Chinese company. The work will start soon under Government to Government (G2G) basis," Mr Khan said.
