DHAKA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China will fund Bangladesh for construction of the ninth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge and other infrastructure development projects. Bangladesh's Economic Relations Department (ERD) Secretary Kazi Shofiqul Azam and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ma Mingqiang signed an agreement in this regard on Thursday in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

Ma said China has been supporting Bangladesh's infrastructure development to help it realize its economic development goals.

"I hope that we can use this money smartly and more efficiently so that more and more people can benefit from this excellent relationship between Bangladesh and China," Ma said.

Kazi Shofiqul Azam said Bangladesh's relationship with China is excellent and outstanding. Seven friendship bridges have been completed across Bangladesh under Chinese grants, and the eighth one is under construction, he said.

"It will be a symbol of friendship actually. We hope that we will be able to sign another grant agreement in near future."

The Chinese assistance will play a vital role on the economic and social development of the country as well as the communication sector, an ERD statement said.
  • ERD said the location of the ninth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge and other infrastructure projects will be settled later on through negotiations of the two governments.
  • The eighth friendship bridge is under construction over Kocha River in southern Bangladesh. The length of the bridge will be 1,400 meters and Bangladesh Roads and Highway department has been carrying out the project.
  • The construction of the first Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge, with a span of more than 917 meters in length, began in October 1986, and was completed in February 1989.

I am now thinking about the naming of the bridges.''China-Bangladesh friendship bridge''.There are already 8 bridges in Bangladesh bearing this name and everyday hundreds of thousands of people who are using these bridges are thinking about China and it's generocity and friendship towards Bangladesh. This is a very successful public relation work China is doing in BD. There are other things in BD which also bear similar name like international conference center.

Another thing which is coming to mind is that, India never built anything in BD naming 'India-Bangladesh frienship.......'Although in recent time they are trying to make an influence in BD and most recently giving us 5 billion dollar of credits and 10 billion dollar investment proposal although they don't have excess money to throw around. But they never thought about any project like this which could have worked as a good public relation thing. This incidence perhaps illustrate another difference between Chinese smartness vs Indian clumsiness.:P

Interesting idea my friend! Until recent decade China used to be a net recipient of foreign aid, naming style of projects perhaps is influenced by Soviet aid in the 1950's (until Sino-Soviet Split), for example "Sino-Soviet Friendship Bridge". More importantly influence by Japanese aid, since 1979 China has obtained approximately 3.4 trillion Japanese Yen loans in the aggregate as well as other types of technical cooperation assistance and grant aid etc., Japan is the largest donor country to China, reach up over 60% of all bilateral assistance provided to China in all donor countries. Example is "China-Japan Friendship Hospital".
