What's new

China to back India’s UNSC bid

This seems to be pretty encouraging. However, it remains to be seen whether all the talk is actually converted to action.

Further, what kind of implication would this have on our neighbours other than China. Also, why would China want to back us, if they consider us strategic rivals.

There is more than what meets the eye here - did we promise something?

Hmmmm.....lets wait and watch!

100% agree with u, wait and watch. We can't believe them keeping in mind their past actions.

Also, china never plays in open they uses their proxy.

Now this is very interesting, I always knew China would Abstain,
But to openly cast a vote in favour, that is unexpected.

I wonder what the future hold now,

So what's that

I think apart from these 5 permanent members we need the support of 2/3 of non-permanent members as well... On top of that permanent member without VETO power would mean nothing...So there is still a long way to go for india in this regard...Moreover some arm twisting by Pakistan does have the potential to spoil this....Still i believe this is a welcome move...

Dude, the day India gets veto power.

Kashmir issue - PROBLEMO SOLVE!

That is common mis-conception

The day India joins UNSC

Pakistan can no longer hope for UN intervention or any kind 3rd party or foreign intervention.

It becomes a full Bilateral issue in Pakistan , that they can only solve by talking to India.

In fact this applies to everything , Pakistan frequently seek 3rd part mediation on all issues.

Relax! The Big Five won't give fresh boys the veto rights. None, even Russia, will agree that India should have a veto right in UNSC. US too ONLY supports Japan for a non veto permanent UNSC member. For China and Russia India is a better choice than Japan. It is obvious, isn't it?

Looking at the comments of some members on Pakistan one would know that India will never be a matured world power. Cheers!

Would you mind elaborating more on the bolded part???

Nothing like that.....There is not going to be any intervention of a 3rd party in Kashmir...There has never been(even when we had little stake in world politics) and there would never be(considering our importance has increased many folds)...So Pakistan call for 3 party intervention is nothing but a mere rhetoric for internal consumption...There are less takers of this call in international arena...even their all weather friend China has the view that Kashmir should be solved bilaterally...So IMO there is no hope to even hope for a third party intervention....

However as someone said the key is VETO power....India has made it clear that they don't want UN permanent seat with VETO ...so as said before there is a long way to go!!

Lets be honest here, if the 5 most influential nation agree that India should be on the council.

we definitely must have enough support around the world to become a new member.

And also, we don't need consensus or near-consensus , it can be forced if has to be.

The only opposition we have is

Uniting for Consensus (UfC) is a movement (nicknamed the Coffee Club) that developed in the 1990s in opposition to the possible expansion of the United Nations Security Council. Recently revived by Italy, it now has about 40 members aiming to counter the G4 nations' bids for permanent seats. The leaders are Italy, South Korea, Mexico, Argentina and Pakistan.

Some of the members of the Uniting For Consensus group are:

Argentina, Colombia, Mexico- opposed to a bid for Brazil

Italy, Netherlands, Spain - opposed to a bid for Germany (wishing for a seat for the whole European Union)

South Korea - opposed to a bid for Japan

Pakistan - opposed to a bid for India

Canada - opposed in principle to expansion not achieved by consensus or near-consensus

Pakistan still believes the only way to solve Kashmir in its favour is through 3rd party intervention.

It has made man attempts some almost successful.

As long as there is chance it might happen Pakistan will drag the issue.

Veto power is not something to be taken lightly, China has only uesd it a few times.

Don't judge the soviets too badly , a few of their veto's were for our sake.

Frankly the UNSC assures us sovereignty , and freedom from intervention on Bilateral issues.

Our support in the UNSC primarily from Russia has prevented that so far , having our seat means our own veto and our own security.

Of course we also have to meet the UNSC obligations .

Chinese are good businessman...worldover. They must have done some calculation for supporting ( or for the lip service). We must not get carried away by this news...Keep on pushing ...keep on increasing our capability/competence...and let the world take note of Rising India.

I don't think China would let a rivalry country have the power who is most likely to use them against our (Pakistan's and Regional) interests. But so far, good for India.

arey politics is always politics.

Its all calculation and tactics. But we are also doing that.

Such public announcements is good enough news.

India news is notoriously unreliable. And this particular one is blatantly hilarious…

With any sound logic, do you think, with ZN problem not solved, with Dalai recently mutated into “the son of India”, China would give to India an SC seat with veto power?

If so, the Chinese would have an IQ of only 1% of what the Indians have.

Yeah, making China India enemy #1 gets rewarded...

its time China "reviews" its policies on UN reforms to "welcome" its neighbour to the group.

It's a Review! Man!

Thats a million dollar question...What would India and China think of each other...Rivals or people in same boats for same destination....

Just to bring it to your notice the same country who is claimed to be our rival is also our bigggest trade partner(already $60 billion)...The same country with which we have border dispute from past 50 years(approx) and yet we managed to have peaceful borders...In the end i will sum up with a quote from our External Affairs Minister...

There is unprecedented engagement between India and China on many fronts whether it be in trade and commerce, high level political interaction, contact between our defence establishments, cultural exchange, education, tourism and the environment

Although unprecedented, this is but a fraction of what we can do together

So are we really rivals??? Well may be but if you go by happenings in past 2 decades then you get an inclination that both countries have realized that animosity is not going to help....So are we friends..Not at all...Both countried have apprehentions about each other...CHina's help to Pakistan is not an unknown and India's growing proximity with US might be troubling China...On top of that we have a border dispute to take care of...So what exactly are we???

I think we are neighbours with normal relations and both want to be good neighbours if not friends..The least both neighbours want is to be enemies...

I have read a lot of your comments - you post under the garb of the US flag but at heart you are a true "WE ALL KNOW WHAT". Anyhow, the point is simple - China realizes that without India on its side it will not be able to achieve supremacy in any world order - THAT is the POWER of the BIGGEST DEMOCRACY in the world!

2nd - India has already acknowledged the Chinese occupation of TIBET as LEGITIMATE.

3rd - No point taking India on right now as China has achieved much economically which it would not like to forgo in the near future. No point taking on an opponent who can inflict collateral damage to your nation thus pushing you back 20-30 years no matter what happens to the opponent. The cost of going back 20-30 years in the event of a war is way too big.

4th - There is only so much China can achieve funding certain nations. Quite clearly it has not yielded positive results in the past for I DONT KNOW HOW MANY YEARS. Trading with India is a better option than pouring millions into an outcome which is most likely not going to see fruition. They stand to gain BILLIONS without pouring any money into any nation.

5th - Further backing the biggest democracy is also an integration approach that the Chinese have been looking at and wanting from the rest of the world for many years - They stand to gain by changing their image as an opponent to democracy. If the biggest democracy is at ease with the Chinese then why not other democracies. IT IS WHAT YOU CALL PR.

I hope your doubts are cleared now.RIGHT NOW IT MAKES SENSE FOR THE CHINESE TO BACK INDIA!
