China temporarily bans Wildlife trade

The problem is that China has 1.4 billion people. So even if 1% acts like shithead, you are talking about at least 14 million people which is a big market still. If China was the size of Thailand, all this wouldn't matter.

Most of the world may not like American foreign policy, but they still admire the US and aspire to things American.

You can't say the same about China. Ask most people around the world what they think of when they think China, it's repressive evil government, crappy cheap products (even though this is changing), weird people eating disgusting things. I guess it doesn't matter to you like it doesn't matter to most Chinese what others think because they lack social skills and situational awareness.

Compare that to S. Korea, which has 1/30th of China's population. S. Korea is loved by a lot of people around the world because of its tremendous soft power. China is pathetic in comparison.
Not really, large number of expatriate lives in China and they bring back a lot of positive things about China to their countries. If China imagine is so bad as u think, why China is the fourth largest destination for tourist? India also a big country with sea access and nearer to Europe, couldn't attract as much toutist as China?

When comes to politic power which is very critical. SK is no where to be seen compare to China.

Majority of them may not eat wildlife meat but a looot of them take Chinese medicine which have these ingredients. And that's a cause of illegal wildlife trade.

I remember there is a time when the government try to lower the consumption of shark fin a few years ago, what they manage to do is that they stopped the legal importing (it is legal to import shark fin with restriction and licenses, but most airline inbound to Hong Kong will not take the cargo if there are shark fin present) but what it lost in legal import, the illegal import increased to compensate. You just make it easier (now that they don't go though legal mean) and more expensive (now that its harder to come by)

The problem with exotic food in Hong Kong and Asia is like the problem with drug in South America. You have a large demand on those item, and you have people that are poor enough to take the risk, which mean no matter how much you try, you most likely ended up losing, and as Chinese in general got richer, again, as long as there are Chinese that live below poverty line, these trade will still be there because there are market, and there are people who can pay for it to sustain the market.

It's hard to next to impossible to alter the eating habit of a person, IMO, you probably better off have better control of wet market than banning it, it's like Chicken trade, you centralise the butchering centre to make it safe to human consumption. If these trade goes underground, this would mean the government would be 10 times harder to control it.

These people you answer your post to is the reason why China have zero soft power. That's because they don't care. And you cannot not care what other people think or what other country think until you are big enough and more importantly, influential enough to sway what people think, and China have not reach the point yet. And if at this stage China appear to have ignore the worldview like what these people think, the world will see China as a sense of overinflated ego.

What can increase China soft power? Children. Not that children are the future, but if you control a generation of kids via TV Program or Toy, you control the view of the whole generation. Why kids? That's because kid's mind are simple, and when these kids growth up, they are going to impart their own value into their own kids, so they basically help to control the next generation of kids as well. There is a reason why Disney publish all these superhero movie, and there is a reason why toys like GI Joe is popular not only in the US but in the world. What they basically trying to do is to groom a generation of kids and young adult into Americanised Value. If China want to control the world like the US? They need to come up with the Kiddy movie of the century and toy of the century. At this moment, even Japan did it better with Anime and Computer games than China.

You're counting your chickens before they roost. It's not a foregone conclusion that China will become the indisputable superpower.
Oh, but it is. You can interpret "the indisputable superpower" however you like, but what is inevitable is that China will become the wealthiest, most technologically advanced, and most militarily powerful state on Earth. And it will command the respect that such a position enjoys, whether America-worshipping simpletons the world over like it or not.

The US has only recently made a decisive break with prior policy and is now waging a massive disinformation campaign to mar China's reputation.
America is like that poor soul who was filmed jumping off the WTC during 9/11. It doesn't matter how loudly it screams or how hard it flaps its hands, it only ends one way: splat.

That will endanger China's room to maneuver.
How? Be specific. People like you keep asserting this, yet China continues to rise unhindered.

Such ban may not make much difference.

Trade of protected wildlife has previously been banned, but underground transactions are still widespread.

Are you serious? Look at the HK riots. Hong Kongers are ethnic Han Chinese by every measure and they were brainwashed to hate their own country, work against their OWN interests (Hong Kong's interests) and fly the flag of foreign nations. If that isn't a measure of how weak China's soft power is, I don't know what is. The HK riots have significantly damaged the prospect of the original plan of a functional Greater Bay Area and have introduced fifth element terrorists unto Chinese soil. If you don't think is an example of how China's inability to project any soft power harms China's interests, I don't know what is. Trust me, it will only get worse. The US corporate media is extremely powerful and they have only started to get the gears going in terms of completely destroying China's reputation. This is what the US corporate media thrives on, reputation smearing and demonizing of your opponent, this is what FOX does to the Democrats, this is what MSNBC does to the Republicans. The difference is that US corporate media are united in their demonization and dehumanization of China and China won't have any ability to respond because it is completely inept at telling its own story.

Then use of any means necessary is justified to defend our existence.

It can make a difference when you publicly execute these people to bring fear to the criminals.

Yeah, I'm serious. I'm also serious about ending this conversation since I have no interest in wasting my time with people who don't have a modicum of historical understanding. Hong Kong was colonized by Britain for a century; I don't care if they're ethnic Han or Martians, hatred and contempt of China was fed to them with their mothers' milk. China has been "their country" for a shorter time than most of them have been alive. When Western media is powerful enough to get people in Shanghai to do what Hongkies did, I'll worry.

You're like an obese person who goes to the gym for a week and expects to lose all their weight. Well, it didn't take the obese person a week to get obese, so why should it take a week to get fit? Likewise, it'll take more than 20 years to get Hong Kong Chinese after 100 years of colonialism. Let's see what Hong Kong looks like in 2047, let alone 2097.

That's a bit harsh of a punishment for trading wildlife??

Anyway, China also have death penalty on drug smuggler, but that drug trade still rampant in China, death penalty doesn't work, if people are desperate enough and poor enough, they will try everything.

You need to address the market and not punish the people who do that.

Except most of the HK terrorists are under 20. They were teenagers, so they lived their entire lives under the rule of the PRC. HKers mostly identified as Chinese during the handover, they've become more and more anti-China in recent years.

sure it does. purge all smugglers with state terror. there were no smugglers under Mao.

look like it’s bats and snakes. Thailand will have to ban snake eating ?
It is very unlikely that Corona virus can spread from Non Mammels. While, about bat , yes it is mammel. Ebola was originated from bats, Same case for MERS & SARS virus, both were originated from bats too. About snake, nothing wrong.

Well, there are smuggler during Mao era, many smuggle Beer, and food inside China during Great Famine, a few still smuggle drug and most of them smuggle people, in and out of China.....
