Six Chinese surveillance ships have entered waters near islands claimed by both China and Japan.

China said the ships were carrying out "law enforcement" to demonstrate its jurisdiction over the islands, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan.

Two of the vessels left after the Japanese coast guard issued a warning, Japanese officials say.

The move came after Japan sealed a deal to buy three of the islands from their private Japanese owner.

Japan controls the uninhabited but resource-rich East China Sea islands, which are also claimed by Taiwan.

'No force'

The Japanese Coast Guard said the first two Chinese boats entered Japan's territorial waters at 06:18 local time (21:18 GMT Thursday), followed by another fleet of four other ships just after 07:00.

The first two ships then left the area. No force was used, Japanese officials added.

"Our patrol vessels are currently telling them to leave our country's territorial waters," the coastguard said in a statement.

The Chinese foreign ministry confirmed that its ships were there.

"These law enforcement and patrol activities are aimed to demonstrate China's jurisdiction over the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islets and ensure the country's maritime interests," a statement said.

The US has called for ''cooler heads to prevail'' as tension intensifies between China and Japan over the islands, which lie south of Okinawa and north of Taiwan.

The Japanese government says it is buying the islands to promote their stable and peaceful management.

Its move followed a bid by right-wing Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara to buy the islands using public donations - an action that would likely have further raised tensions with China.

China, on the other hand, says the islands have historically been its territory and fishing grounds.

China's defence ministry has issued a strongly-worded statement against Japan's move to buy the islands.

"We are watching closely the evolution of the situation and reserve the right to take reciprocal measures,'' ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

Taiwan Coast Guard holds drill near Diaoyutais

With dozens of reporters and representatives of local fishery associations onboard, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) has sent the 2,000-ton Ho Hsing vessel (和星艦) to the area to observe a duty changeover between the 500-ton Lienchiang (連江艦) and the 600-ton Hualien (花蓮艦) patrol boats.

Coast Guardsmen on the two patrol vessels also conducted drills with the 20 mm cannons deployed on the ships, which are the main weapons onboard the Taiwanese vessels.

CGA Minister Wang Ginn-wang (王進旺) told media yesterday that his administration will dispatch vessels to patrol the area frequently, and the patrol service will be conducted on a daily basis during the fishing season.

“Our Coast Guard patrol vessels will follow wherever fishing boats go,” he noted.

CGA officials said Taiwan currently conducts patrol operations on Taiwan's side of the temporary law enforcement line with Japan near the Diaoyutais around the clock, and that “onsite changeovers” can help shorten response times in the event that any actions are necessary.

But if Taiwanese fishermen operate outside Taiwan's side of the enforcement line and enter waters claimed by Japan, the CGA will not dispatch vessels to protect them, in order to avoid conflict. Instead they will offer diplomatic assistance to fishermen when needed, the CGA said.

At present, the CGA has 161 ships and is expected to expand its fleet to 173 vessels by 2015.

The CGA's move followed the Japanese government's approval to nationalize three islets of the island group a day earlier. Japan's decision infuriated Taiwan and China, which both claim sovereignty over the archipelago.

Japans' time is officially up now. Japan is no more. Japan is no more. Because of Japan's crimes against humanity, this is what Japan is getting.

Now China has returned. Japan was a fluke in history like Britain.

IF britain and Japan were flukes then what was Pakistan??

IF britain and Japan were flukes then what was Pakistan??

You mean those island based countries?

They invaded other countries for raw materials/natural resources.

The only reason they became strong is because they had a scholastic (university) culture and industrial revolution.

Pakistan, China, and India were still societies that believed in professional artisans and having apprentices. Also they were agriculturally based economies not knowledge based and industrial!

Do you know why Britain and Japan committed injustices against the world. It seems the Bharti is having an inferiority complex now?
Britain too committed injustices against your country too and you standing up for Britain. Have you no manhood? Do you know what the Britain did to your Maharajahs and Rajahs? what they did to my Nawabs and Nizams? What they did the Qing China.

Grow up ok! Think first before typing nonsense, ok!

However the stupid westerners knew that one day Pakistan, China, and maybe even India would become strong one day, so they put the Kashmir dispute and the South Tibet dispute so we could destroy each other.

Also the westerners left the Diaoyu dispute unresolved between China and Japan, because the westerners only care about white people. They don't care about Far east Oriental yellow people.

Even if Japan becomes a westernized country, they don't care about Japan.

Japan is just a pawn state of the west.

The only reason mainland China has to take such a proactive stance in this is because Taiwan, for whatever reasons, has been too timid in its approach regarding Diaoyudao/Diaoyutai. Taiwan so far has officially put forth at most verbal rebukes against Japan and has not been taking a proactive stance to islands that, for all intents and purposes, both China and Taiwan regards should rightfully be administrated by Taiwan.

Sweet looking ships. I see they use the stripe as in the US for denoting CG...but with a little difference. If I was Chinese I would choose CG over navy (ps....what do you call your Coast Guard?) (oops ...read the side...got it):smokin:

Chinese vessels leave Japanese waters
Sep. 14, 2012 - Updated 06:14 UTC (15:14 JST)

All 6 Chinese government vessels that entered Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea earlier on Friday have now left the area.

The intrusion by Chinese ships was the first since Japan's government nationalized the islands on Tuesday.

The Senkaku Islands are also claimed by China and Taiwan.

The Japan Coast Guard spotted the 6 vessels entering the waters from 6:20 to shortly after 7:00 AM on Friday.
The ships belong to China's State Oceanic Administration.

The Coast Guard sent patrol boats and aircraft and ordered the vessels to leave.

Three ships left the waters about 90 minutes later. The remaining 3 were confirmed to have sailed away by 1:30 PM.

The ships responded to the Coast Guard's warning in Chinese, claiming that the islands have long been Chinese territory.

One of the vessels replied in Japanese that it was conducting a legitimate mission and said the Japanese ships should leave.
