China seeks to enhance military cooperation with Thailand

China on Wednesday vowed to boost military cooperation with Thailand.

China and Thailand had conducted friendly and fruitful cooperation in the political and economic areas, said Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie when meeting with Air Chief Marshal Itthaporn Subhawong, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Air Force.

Liang said relations between the Chinese and Thai armed forces had developed well with frequent high-level visits and expanded cooperation.

Itthaporn's visit would certainly help promote the development of China-Thailand relations and military ties, in particular the friendly cooperation between the air forces of the two countries, Liang said.

Itthaporn said Thailand was devoted to boosting strategic cooperative relations with China and would like to further strengthen their military exchanges and cooperation.

We already have very friendly relationship with Thailand. I've read on this year's first or second issue of Asian Security journal a majority of Thai respondents to a survey put China ahead of U.S as Thailand's closest ally.

We also have no territorial dispute with Thailand, and both of us have disputes with Vietnam, so if America decides to support Vietnam militarily I think we and Thailand will have a lot to discuss.

On topic, Thailand and China been having good relationship for a long time, like our Chinese friend had stated, we having common interest against Vietnam. People just don't realize the influence of Chinese origin Thais in Thailand on both political and commercial wise.

Vietnam and Thailand relationship are now the best ever. Disputed interest, if any, are small. I am from the north of Vietnam, so I do not know much about the situation in the sea of South Vietnam bordering Thailand area but I think the general situation is good. What are the Thai interest which is against Vietnam and common with China?.

I think Thailand and China has more in common in terms of culture and confucism than other SE asian nations. I could be wrong. As for Vietnam being a common enemy, I don't really know.

China and Thailand had hold joint exercises in 2005, 2007 and 2009. I think a naval exercises is planned for later this year.

Military ties between Thailand and PRC started when Vietnam moved to occupy Cambodia and both China and Thailand sought to contain Vietnamese influence in Southeast Asia. So the relationship between the two militaries actually began as an anti-Vietnam axis. Granted Thailand and Vietnam's relationship improved a lot after Vietnamese withdrawn from Cambodia. But if Vietnam's military grows stronger it would be natural if China and Thailand would want to counterbalance Vietnam again.
