China says 3,001 arrested for product piracy

BEIJING

Chinese authorities say they have arrested 3,001 people and seized fake medicine, mobile phones and other goods in a 5-month-old crackdown on product piracy.

China faces pressure from the United States and other trading partners to stamp out a black market industry that is thriving despite repeated crackdowns. Chinese officials have promised their latest enforcement will produce lasting results.

Sunday's announcement says police and commerce officials have seized 26,000 counterfeit mobile phones, some bearing the Nokia and Apple brand names, as well as fake or counterfeit liquor, medicines, electric appliances and other goods.

China concerned over listing of its firms in US 'notorious list'

BEIJING: China has expressed concern over United States' move to put some Chinese firms on a notorious markets " list, saying that Washington's decision might hurt the firms' reputation.

Li Chenggang, head of the Department of Treaty and Law under the Ministry of Commerce, expressed the concern over whether it is appropriate to issue such a report since it provided no detailed evidence.

"Even the report itself said the list represents neither the results of investigation nor the evaluation of the US government," Li said at a press conference in Beijing.

Li was commenting on a list of "notorious markets" for selling counterfeit and pirated goods issued by the Office of the United States Trade Representative last month.

The list included China's Internet search engine Baidu and e-commerce giant Taobao.

"We have studied the report thoroughly," he said. "Such move might have negative impacts on the reputation of the involved companies and we are concerned about it," state run Xinhua quoted him as saying.
