China’s flip-flop on Kashmir

Good work done by our diplomats. Hopefully we can engage with all our neighbours to produce a conducive environment for peace.

Indians friends seem never to tire of self congratulatory triumphalism -- or as they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade:smitten:

Isn't it a good cause for one to congratulate oneself.?

Especially China going back on its 'Principled' Stapled Visa policy considering the higher than 8848 m and deeper than 7 mile friendship that Pakistan and China share.

On a serious note - I too tend to agree with Bang Galore, even though I have not thought about it till now :woot:

Actually credit goes to the return of common sense in the Chinese foreign ministry. The stapled Visa policy worked in India's favour since no Kashmiri would be allowed to leave India on one and we could blame Chinese intransigence for that. Why would India want Kashmiris going to China given Pakistan's close relationship with that state? I never understood the media furore. India was infinitely better served with the Chinese continuing with stapled visas.

Well the Chinese would have continued with status quo(stapling visa) if the cost of not changing this policy was not explained by the Indian side. And its not really that hard to bypass the stapled visa policy. What was happening was people from J&K would go to Hong Kong or Taiwan and then take a stapled visa to China and no one would know about it. It was official delegations, like journalists, sportsperson, army officers that would not be able to go that way.

In any case, the number of J&K residents going to China(which was quite small) is not the issue, it is about China recognisisng that J&K is an intergral part of India and without GoI forcing this issue, it would not have been resolved in a satisfactory manner.

Well frankly what was the cost,if it was about trade anyway it would have continued like the way,and India had never in mind to challenge the one China policy.

On the other note it can be said they did not have anticipated this kind of outburst from Indian side, its good that finally sanity prevailed.

Even the information in article is good, but its put in very bad way. Media when dealing with issues like this as two put in simple subtle way, not to exaggerate. India & China have some strained relations, media is making it even worse.

People, please stop posting from Hindustan Times & TOI. They really know how to turn interesting things into crap.

Start reading The Hindu. Stop using the crap medias like TOI, HT, India TV etc. My earnest request to sane, educated people of India, lest sensationalism turns you on.

What's the point of your education of you can't separate good stuff from the bad one?

Well cost is not just monetary cost, it could be related to material cost, security cost as well as just making things difficult for China in other ways. I don't want to speculate on what was put on the table but without a combination of carrots and sticks to China, it would be impossible for China to turn its policy on its own accord. This is certainly a credit for GoI as far as I can see for now atleast.
