China and Russia have expressed support for Indonesia’s proposal that a high-level ASEAN meeting be held to address the situation in post-coup Myanmar, Indonesia’s foreign minister has said, as Myanmar’s military continues to kill citizens. Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi met with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Fujian, China, on Friday to discuss the latest developments in Myanmar, among other issues.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, she said both ministers shared deep concern about the Myanmar military’s use of violence against citizens. They urged the military to stop the violence and open dialogue. “China has supported [ASEAN’s] efforts and offers to help Myanmar, including support for President [Joko] Jokowi [Widodo’s] initiative to hold an ASEAN summit,” Retno said on Friday. This is quite huge to get support from China and Russia simultaneously. So this is really about Myanmar that all democratic nations in ASEAN are in China now @casual

So we got China and Russia to support the ASEAN initiative.. how about the US and EU stance...?

Looks like a last ditch diplomatic effort to meditate before Myanmar becomes a failed state. Still, I don't think China and ASEAN have the leverage with the myanmar gov and protesters to change anything now.

ASEAN doesn't interfere in domestic affairs. It is more interested in trading issues.

Of course US and EU very supportive with this kind of international pressure, but if that military junta is so solid, nothing we can do, it is intended to make some crack inside the junta that in return press them to make political concession and get safe exit

They will get the junta to set a date for elections. I don't think this will be enough for most of the protesters. Protesters demands have hardened around regime change.

There is still Sukyi official who are now in exile, they are more rational than the protester. They can make a good and more pragmatic move. It is why the communication line between those two powers (Junta and Sukyi officials) should remain open. The protester will likely follow what the Sukyi official decide.

voices in the west will spin this as legitimizing the coup. still, this is the best chance yet for a peaceful resolution.

I think they can if China support it. Myanmar military coup is obviously started with American blessing. The junta send a secret message asking US for opinion if they start coup. The US lies to them by claiming they will not interfere.

China has always support the Rule of Laws but also it also strongly believe in the principle of non interference in other nations affairs as endorsed by NAM in Bandung, Indonesia more than century ago.

China has always been very consistent e.g. Pakistan, Cambodia, Thailand, etc.
US demonized China by accusing it of being an ally of Pol Pot.
Hun Sen who was the fierce opponent of Pol Pot is now accused of being an ardent supporter of China.
Hun Sen finally understand China stance.

The Junta is facing charges of crimes against humanity if they cannot continue to hold onto power. I don't think there's any possibility of a negotiated settlement here. After all, they control overwhelming advantage in military power even if the EOAs manage to unite. What I'm trying to say is prepare for Syria 2.0. China needs to step up border security with Myanmar and lean hard on the EOAs on the border with China to help patrol the border too. Also, prepare to deploy forces into Myanmar on a moment's notice in case western nations gets involved.

China will not allow that. If reaches that stage. PLA will enter and remove junta. The no interference policy is BS. When national interest is in place. Nothing is negotiable.
