China rushes surveillance ships to islands claimed by Vietnam

BEIJING: Amid rising tensions between China and its neighbours over the disputed territories in the South China Sea, Beijing today sent four surveillance ships to the area also claimed by Vietnam after spotting a foreign fishing vessel there.

The ships reached the Nansha islands, at the centre of the disputed areas, this morning when radar suggested the presence of a foreign fishing vessel nearby.

According to the team, Chinese patrol staff immediately broadcast a statement in Chinese, English and Vietnamese to proclaim sovereignty of the Xisha Islands and Nansha Islands also claimed by Vietnam, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Yesterday, the team conducted a formation practice near Yongshu Reef in the South China Sea. The two-hour practice session was fulfilled smoothly but a helicopter scheduled to take part did not do so, due to adverse weather.

The ships reached Huayang Reef, a coral reef in the Nansha Islands, on Sunday and anchored northeast of Yongshu Reef on Sunday evening.

Since taking off from south China's coastal city of Sanya on June 26, the team has sailed more than 2,000 nautical miles.

China rushed the ships to the islands after Vietnam passed a new law in its parliament asserting the islands are part of its Exclusive Economic Zone, (EEZ).

China immediately protested and summoned Vietnamese Ambassador here and conveyed its resentment over the move by Hanoi.

Vietnam referred to the islands Spratly islands and sent two Russian-made Su-27 fighters to conduct a "patrol flight" over the disputed islands.

China has a similar dispute going with Philippines on another island.

The scores of islands in the South China Sea over which Beijing lays claim were also claimed by other countries.

Vietnam, Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan assert many of them formed part of their Exclusive Economic Zone. Whereas China asserts that they were all inherent part of its maritime waters.

HATs off to the peaceful rise of CHINA :cheesy:

Actually China has been very consistent with the peaceful rise for the past decades, but our enemies take it as weakness and try to take advantage of us. When we don't fight back we are called "weak", but when we fight back we are called "aggressive" so now will just do whatever is in OUR best interest. Deal with it, don't cry about it.

China has huge naval advantage to others in S. China Sea
2011-12-06

According to Indonesian Center of Democracy, Diplomacy and Defense executive director Teuku Rezasyah, Malaysia has two battleships, the Philippines one, China 27 and Taiwan 26 operating in the South China Sea.

He said Vietnam had several escort vessels operating in the area, while no data was available for Brunei’s operations there.

“China’s 27 naval vessels do not even include the aircraft carrier and submarines [it operates in the South China Sea],” he told The Jakarta Post recently.

He said a Type 093 Shang class nuclear-powered attack submarine was observed at the pier under construction.

Significant construction is still underway at the Yalong Bay Naval Base on Hainan Island, including a fourth submarine pier at the southern section of the base, increased camouflage over the submarine pen and a bunkered rail line on the eastern side of the basin peninsula, he said.

“China has successfully massively reclaimed shores on Nam Yit Island and Southwest Cay Island, which borders the Philippines. China has made those hubs for its aircraft carriers based on satellite imagery,”
Rezasyah said.

He said that China was likely preparing for a worst-case scenario, with Nam Yit Island able to support three aircraft carriers.

@Beijingwalker:

Don't ever wish which was it will become the realities. I don't think Chinese could "Beijing swimmer" or "Beijing crawler" on sea and land when China CROSSING the limited line.
