President Donald Trump's proposal for a 50% reduction in military defense budgets for the United States, China and Russia was rejected by China. Larger plan of Trump to lower international military spending and advance disarmament especially with regard to nuclear weapons included this suggestion. In order to address these cuts Trump stated that he would like to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He emphasized that the current level of military spending is excessive and would be better used for other objectives.

Opposing China's reaction Russian President Vladimir Putin has endorsed Trump's plan calling it a "good idea." Putin pointed out that if the United States follows suit Russia might agree to cut its military budget by 50% leaving the choice up to China. This position shows that despite recent increases in military spending brought on by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine Russia is amenable to talks with the United States regarding reductions in defense budget.

China's strategic interests and the need to continue its military modernization efforts are the reasons behind its hesitancy to join this project. Beijing sees its defense budget as essential to preserving its sovereignty and promoting world peace. Chinese commitment to military modernization across all sectors of its armed forces is shown in the notable gains in its defense budget which increased by 7.2% in the previous year. Chinese leadership stresses that it does not participate in arms competitions with any nation and that its military spending is open and fair when compared to other superpowers.

Russia and China divergent reactions draw attention to intricate geopolitical factors at work. China is concerned about surrendering its military assets and is focused on its strategic goals, while Russia sees possible benefits in lowering tensions through mutual defense reduction. Trump's attempts to refocus American foreign policy priorities on cost reduction and reallocating funds to other national objectives are also highlighted in the proposal. However, considering the various interests and security concerns of the participating countries, the viability of such a proposal is still up in the air.
