The Type 001A aircraft carrier is the first one made in China for the Chinese Navy
New Delhi
: New images indicate that China is racing towards completion of its first home-grown aircraft carrier.

A month after NDTV reported that the hull of the ship, designated the Type 001-A appeared complete, a fresh set of images indicates that the 'island' of the carrier, in many ways the nerve-centre of the warship, has now been installed ahead of sea-trials commencing. The 'island' of the carrier consists of its bridge, aviation facilities, and battle-control spaces. Radars and sensors are mounted on the island in addition to air intakes and funnels from its engines.

The Type 001-A, which is being constructed at a dry dock in the port city of Dalian to the East of Beijing, will likely weigh in at 60,000 tons and host close to 50 aircraft including 36 J-15 fighters, a Chinese replica of the Russian Su-27. The process of completing trials will, however, take a few years and the new Chinese carrier is unlikely to be commissioned before 2020.

The 001-A is the second Chinese aircraft carrier and its design is thought to be based on the Russian-designed Liaoning, a Russian designed aircraft carrier acquired by Beijing from the Ukraine several years after the collapse of the USSR.

Significantly, new images have emerged on Chinese social media of a new variant of the J-15 fighter, designated the J-15A. The nose-wheel of the fighter features a catapult launch mechanism which clearly indicates that subsequent Chinese aircraft carriers and their strike fighters will likely be more capable than both the Liaoning and the Type 001.

A catapult launch system, which is hooked up to the nose-wheel of carrier-borne aircraft, uses a compressed steam driven piston drive or an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) to propel a fully loaded fighter jet off the small deck of an aircraft carrier. At the moment, the Liaoning and the Type 001-A use a 'ski-jump' launch system where carrier-borne fighter jets use only the power of their own engines to accelerate down the runway of the carrier before being propelled off its deck from an inclined structure resembling a ski-jump. Without the additional acceleration provided by a catapult system, China's existing J-15 fighters need to weigh less to take off and consequently carry fewer weapons and possibly fuel making them significantly less capable during operational deployments.

The pace of completion of China's first home-grown aircraft carrier is a matter of concern for the Indian Navy. India's indigenous aircraft carrier, named Vikrant (after the first carrier to enter its fleet), is no-where close to completion despite having been launched in Kochi a full three-years before China's 001-A.

Though the hull, superstructure, and engines of the Vikrant have been integrated, its primary sensor, the Israeli MF-STAR (Multi-Function Surveillance, Track and Guidance) radar and Barak 8 Long Range surface to air missiles have not yet been acquired for this project. In a damaging report last year, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said, "With INS Vikramaditya [India's only operation aircraft carrier] in service and INS Viraat likely to be de-commissioned in 2016-17, continuous shifting of timelines of delivery of the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier will adversely impact naval capabilities."

. .
On defence matters, China moves fast while India likes to dilly-dally over the most basic of matters. Look how long it took the Rafale deal to get done.

. .
aircraft carriers haven't faced a real threat since WW2, I can see both China and India knocking each other carriers out early in a war.
you are truely devil,usa boy
why not UK vs india, uk should pay compensation with india for the exploitation during the colonization

No country can match the speed at which China completes projects whether those are roads, dams or ACC. China has a huge industrial base and efficient workforce and smart management.

Unfortunately UK is not trying to bully India even when they got an Island very close to us. I guess they are more interested in middle east.

Almost all the western forces are cutting defence budgets, while Asian countries increasing. Its actually good to balance the power in world. If only can Asia stand united shedding petty differences (not including Pakistan here, Obvious reasons).

Just 3 of us China-India-Japan what a mighty force it will be. Unfortunately that will be reality only in new world order. Its good that one Asian nation is included among top military power and another is in progress.

Pakistan taking pride in China's achievements.:rofl::rofl:
What else you expected? If you had spent enough time here you will know it by now. Cheer-leading is the new normal here.

The title makes it seems like its an achievement for China, which it isn't.

. .
We have to order 2 Vikrant clones while they take another 10 years to squabble about a nuke carrier.

.
Vikrant is slated to be ready by 2018. China has industrial capacity hence no surprise.

What I find extremely funny is Pakistan taking pride in China's achievements when they don't even have a corvette on order.:rofl::rofl:

We also don't have at least 40% of the ENTIRE Earth's severely malnourished and extreme poor living in our country:

The above accolade goes to your nation, your race.

It is so hilarious, so typical Indian!

When it comes to competing with realy power, they are like "we should cooperate, work together, shed petty differences blah blah blah."

And otherwise, with smaller neighbors they are like an elephant in porcelain shop.

Tells you about character of this country!

Troll answer: So are you saying Pakistan is not a real power? :)

Actual Answer: Well with great power comes great responsibility. A war with Pakistan is a matter of few days (a few thousand deaths), with Nepal its even less and reduces pretty much to hours when it comes to Bhutan. No destruction on huge scale, no devastation but with China its going to be very messy, very very messy infact (deaths in hundreds of thousands). So the best way most responsible states find is to avoid war as its in nobodies interest.

This however may be an alien concept to you provided you were never actually a state big enough to say these words (you yourself conceded that) even after trying generation after generation for 70 years.

Now zip up and let the elders talk.

You want to tell me, India is a responsible country? :woot:

Now that alone shows how non-serious and worthless the rest of your post is! Kindly stop trolling!
