China overtakes U.S., Japan as top innovative country
Sat 2011/12/24 13:04 JST
The Tokyo Times

China has become for the first time world’s number one nation in terms of patents filed, surpassing countries with longer innovation tradition like the United States and Japan.

The announcement was made by Thomson Reuters, which said that research shows that China has filed the largest number of patents in 2011, without providing further details.

The number of China filed patents has grown at an average of 16 percent every year since 2006, to about 314,000 in 2010. The differences between China and its main competitors will increase over the next few years. Current predictions indicate that China will file about 500,000 patens in 2015, while the U.S. will clock only 400,000, and Japan about 300,000.

"The striking difference among these regions is China [which] is experiencing the most rapid growth, and is poised to lead the pack in the very near future," the Thomson Reuters report indicates.

China is pushing innovation from its own companies by driving innovation in industries such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals and technology. Domestic patent applications in China grew to nearly 73 percent of total applications in 2010, from 52 percent in 2006. Experts say that the Asian giant is trying to change the “Made in China” brand into the new, value-added “Designed in China” brand.

OMG. Not another "1st in patent applications" thread!

Why dont the BOTS ever understand that number of patent applications is NOT= innovation?

Question: Among those number of patent applications, how many are actually granted? You bots are so "good" with numbers, I/we would like to see the actual number of patents GRANTED. Out of those patents, we would like to see how many are actually real innovations, real discoveries, real inventions!!

Got those numbers?

.
again same thing...numbers..numbers and numbers....can chinese guys throw some light in this forum as what innovations chinese have done in last 50 years??? ..when I say innovation...I meant it

. .

when you talk about patent then don't consider it as an invention which can be mentioned proudly by a nation
its a student business.. i did a very small project and get it patent
and as China has maximum population it is natural that they lead in patents as well

.
Whats with the nitpicking? While I dont think China is Top1 in science yet, but I'm more than positive they will be very soon, regardless if its in 2012 or 2020, therefore I have no problem with such announcements. There are many measurements of science progress, in some China might be 1st already, in some might take 10 or 20 years.

so, better the subject line be modified accordingly...as it is misleading....as per my knowledge....there is no link between innovation and china...china can at most produce at mass scale given the tech or can imitate or steal...but cant innovate! ..because the basic building block of their economy is based on what i mentioned above except innovation...

Indeed, we need to work hard for another 10 - 20 years in order to become number one.

But i don't understand why some nation is trying to make fun of us, while they can't even produce a rocket with a measly 100kg payload.

.
Great achievement ;)

Indians mad, because they're not 1. If some miracle were to happen making them one.. you would see threads like this everyday. Instead of facing reality and admitting China is the next super power they complain and cry.. starting with the thread itself.

i guess..it was for Pak...

Jealousy probably, or they cant handle how their "god" USA will be eclipsed in the near future.

and this fellow accepted it.....

*Morale of the story...two fools can achieve anything ;-)

ROFl. How stupid! What part of number of patent applications vs no. of actual patents granted do you NOT understand?

Anyone can file a patent. Really. Any idiot can and will do. But we would like to see the number of patents granted for Chinese 'innovators'. Got those numbers?
