China increasingly aggressive on the Falklands: “UK stubbornly clings to its colonial sin”

Monday, October 10th 2022 - 10:50 UTC

The following is the lead editorial of China Daily's 6 October edition, a newspaper belonging to the Chinese Communist Party editorial and refers to the recent Organization of American States declaration in support of Argentina's claims of Falkland Islands sovereignty.

The 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which concluded in Lima, Peru, on Friday, approved a declaration defending Argentina's “legitimate rights” over the Malvinas Islands and supporting a “peaceful and negotiated” solution to the dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over sovereignty of the islands.

The UK had called on the OAS to “recognize the right to self-determination” of the Islanders who had decided in a 2013 vote to remain citizens of a British Overseas Territories and members of the British Family. And UK representative Michael Tatham claimed in the OAS meeting that the UK wants to work “constructively” with Argentina, but Argentina “must accept that there can be no dialogue on sovereignty unless the people of the Falkland Islands decide they want to”.

But as OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro said, the resolution reaffirms “what the organization has historically expressed”. The OAS has been steadfast in upholding Argentina's “inalienable territorial rights” over the Malvinas Islands and in asserting that the British presence on the islands is a remnant of colonialism.

Argentina's Foreign Minister Pablo Tettamanti stressed in his response to Tatham's insistence that the islanders should have their say that “those who inhabit the Islands are an implanted population, mainly British, occupying territory of a sovereign state which Argentina has been claiming since Spanish colonial times”. He denounced the UK representative for simply repeating “the known positions and policies only accepted by the United Kingdom, against the call of the international community”.

The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization has issued resolutions on the issue more than 30 times urging the UK to engage in negotiations with Argentina to settle the dispute. However, the UK has declined all Argentina's invitations to negotiate. The majority of the international community supports Argentina's claim to sovereignty over the islands — which was given further weight by the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf concluding in 2016 that the islands are located within the territorial sea of Argentina — and they have urged the UK to respect the relevant UN resolutions and correct its colonial wrong.

By making its own policy unalterable over such a long time, the UK is intent on dragging out the dispute in the hope that as long as the status quo is maintained, its actual occupation of the islands can become a fait accompli. However, rather than being diluted, forgotten or legitimized, its colonial sins will only become a longer and more shameful entry in the annals of the world with each year that passes.

Lol The people of Falklands are overwhelmingly in support of remaining part of Great Britain. Full stop. Only they alone can determine their future of the island.. case closed. If Argentina thinks otherwise and is hell bent on changing the status quo then they will have to use force, and they are welcome to try . We can even let them get JF17 thunders for that. 😂
On a serious note though, Argentina should forget about this issue. Its already part of Britain. Let's make peace and move on. Just like Russia will never give back the kurils island to Japan, we will never give back our island to Argentina. In this world MIGHT MAKES RIGHT as well, as we have seen again with Russian annexation of crimea and subsequent invasion of Ukraine and annexation of 4 states of Ukraine. Ukraine can only try to regain its territory by force with our support. Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun as your Mao said. Lol 😁
That's the unfortunate world in which we live. So deal with it or keep silent.

Yes because the UK put a bunch of white British people on the island.

The PRC can put a bunch of their own citizens in Tasmania and I can guarantee that those people will fully support being a part of the PRC.

And sure, might makes right. So why bitch about Russia invading the Ukraine, right?

Who has bitched about Russia invading Ukraine? Did you see me bitch about that ?
Russia is doing what she thinks will be best to expand their influence and territory, and we are also doing what we have to do support Ukraine for our own European security interest as well. So let the more determined side determine the outcome which will be settled on the negotiation table at the end of the day , but that again will also depend on military might and realities on the field of battle. So no side is really wrong per se geo politically speaking. Morally speaking though (which is what some members here I think talk about without realising) Russia is the one in the wrong since they invaded an independent country . However, then again Ukraine can only blame itself for having a weak image. If they had a military strong army and recognised as such then Russia would have never even thought about invading in the first place . Once you come across as weak then bigger powers will obviously prey on you since they know the stakes are not that high and they think they can get away with little consequences for their country/teriritory. So there you go

No, you cannot make such a guarantee. Here is a rebuttal from the British side...See if you can challenge it...

But let us say that China put some Chinese on Tasmania and managed to become majority. Do you think that what happened in the past, vis-a-vis history of the Falkland, will be %100 applicable to China's claim in terms of legality? No, you cannot argue so. You would be looking at colonizing Tasmania for several generations, slowly changing the country's social, cultural, and political makeup, and successfully fend off all challenges from the natives. Then China will have to make the ownership claim based upon THAT history, not from the Falkland. But that would be the most optimistic scenario. Realistically speaking, what of the odds that the planted Chinese over time changes their minds and refuse to be a part of China? Pretty damn good. See Taiwan. Also see the Japanese on Hawai'i who wanted to fight against JPN after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Bottom line: Stop trying to defend Russia.

oh please if you can take Falklands do it

you cant lose the war and claim moral high ground

and China cannot even fight Ukraine through Russia let alone support Argentina

Where did you think Argentina people come from ?

The guy does not know his history. go easy on him

Non-Issue... Also why is a Chinese moaning about the Falklands??? Could it be that God King Xi is having stomach pains from the recent lambasting in the international media about Xinjiang and further embarrassment over Taiwan?

How is China voicing its support for Argentina territorial claim “aggressive”?

Every country has their stance over different matters, over the Malvinas Islands, China made it clear that the country is on Argentina's side. You guys can be against China over multiple matters and China is not allowed to be against you?

What are you even going on about with this ridiculous strawman comparisons?

Taiwan's ethnic Chinese are the remnants of an opposing regime which lost a civil war. It would be akin to say the Confederates running away to Puerto Rico and using that as a stronghold. Of course they are going to be hostile to the PRC.

If the PRC somehow got control of Tasmania, pushed out the locals and placed their own citizens in that island, they will 100% be loyal to the PRC. The comparison with Taiwan is absurd.

BTW I do not support Russia's invasion of Ukraine, at the same time, I understand that the circumstances that have led to it was being forced by the US deep state for many strategic reasons that are not being revealed to the public but are self evident to anybody who does the slightest amount of research into the situation.

Americans are not loyal to the British crown

Modern PRC citizens would be loyal to the PRC, I can guarantee that.

But anyways, I posed the hypothetical situation as an explanation of why the Falklands is loyal to Britain. Their population is tiny, first of all, and they are all White British settlers.
