TOKYO - China is holding two Japanese on espionage charges, a newspaper said on Wednesday, a report that prompted Tokyo to deny spying on China or any other country.

The Asahi newspaper said the two men, both from the private sector, had been in custody for several months. One was taken into custody in China's northeast province of Liaoning near the border with North Korea and the other in the eastern province of Zhejiang near a military facility, the paper said.

The newspaper added China appeared to be looking into whether the men were acting under instructions from the Japanese government. "We are aware of the reports but would like to refrain for commenting on specific incidents," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a regular news conference. "Our country in every case is making every effort concerning the safety of our citizens overseas." Asked if Japan was involved in any spying against China, Suga again declined comment on any specific cases but added:"Our country is certainly not doing such things. I would like to say that this is the same with regard to all countries." Chinese President Xi Jinping has overseen a tightening of already strict security laws and regulations, including setting up a new national security commission and renaming the national security law, which took effect in 1993, as the Counterespionage Law.

In 2010, four Japanese nationals were temporarily detained in China on suspicion of entering a military zone and taking photographs without permission. The detentions came at a time of escalating tensions between Tokyo and Beijing.

Sino-Japanese relations, coloured by Japan's occupation of parts of China before and during World War Two, have thawed since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met Xi twice since last November.

Maybe to stay in China "permanently" like these guys.

Permanent residency obtained. LOL.

This is only one tip of the iceberg. Many foreigners come to China do the same, as English teachers, or "I love Chinese culture so much" and other bullshit talk.

Add to that some Western reporters and university teachers.

But the real cancer is English teachers, I admit.

Same in Taiwan.

China should do a stronger and more regular censorship on English teachers. And to be honest, even they are real English teachers, we don't need them either, so many children waste their time to learn this language starting in 3 or 4 years old.

Exactly. That category should entirely be cancelled out. Whatever foreign language is to be taught, that's the business of the schools and domestic private teachers.

We know for fact in Taiwan that, most of the submitted credentials/documents by those foreign trash are fake.

It must be those private language schools/cram schools to be held accountable first, in fact.

Totally agree! One half billion people learn a language they will never need to use is a huge waste of time and money!

And where are the USA spies?

Let's redirect the issue: who doesn't spy? I mean i even spy on my neighbor who tries (on some occasion) to blow his weed on my side of the lawn. Seriously, so annoying. :mad:o_O

There is a TV series called《于无声处》it's about two stories of the silent battle between our 国安局 and US intelligence who want to steel information on our nuke sub, the first story is based on a true incident.

Let them investigate these people. If they are , indeed, spies, then they should be punished accordingly. And if they really are spies-- then they just are bad spies, lol, perhaps been watching too many 007 movies? If they're not spies, then, please release them.

Tora ~Tora ~Tora ~!

Seriously, if they are spies, they're really lousy spies. Imagine getting caught taking pictures of a military facility ... near North Korea. Ugh. Oi Vey ! ....アマチュア :man_in_love:

Three.I see it on Today news Tencent/Cnov.
I remember that we have caught one months before, but he was just deported, not punished
