China funded theater to open in Sri Lanka

Chinese funded performing arts theater is ready to open in Sri Lanka, an official said here on Friday.

China has built the 27-million-U.S.-dollar performing arts theater as a gift to Sri Lanka at the request of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sino-Sri Lanka relations have been growing strongly since the end of a three-decade war in 2009 in the island nation with China becoming its largest patron last year.

This is the first large-scale theater built in the history of Sri Lanka, a gathering of artists told media.

A host of top Chinese dignitaries are expected to attend the opening ceremony that will see a landmark musical performed by Sri Lankan artists.

A Chinese performing troupe will also take the stage at the opening ceremony.

"This is a dream come true for artists," presidential advisor and veteran musician Rohana Weerasinghe said, adding that the facilities were "perfect" and would promote the development of performances in the future.

"Our artists have been waiting a long time to have a stage with such amazing acoustic and technological advancement. This will enable our artists to explore their full potential and put on performances on par with the rest of the world. It will also give a venue for international performances that have been denied to the locals so far," he said.

The theater sports a massive main hall with a seating capacity of 1388 people, an open-air theater, a 350-seat rooftop arena, two parking areas within the building, over a dozen changing rooms, cafeteria and other facilities.
