Pressing ahead with the second phase of military expansion along the China front, the government has given the go-ahead to deployment of Brahmos cruise missiles in Arunachal Pradesh. This will be India’s first offensive tactical missile deployment against China, sources said.

The three Brahmos missile regiments raised so far have been deployed in the western sector to counter the Pakistan threat. This will be the fourth regiment.

With a range of 290 km, these cruise missiles are being deployed to improve India’s military reach into the Tibet Autonomous Region and counter China’s elaborate missile deployment along the Sino-Indian border.

This, sources said, dovetails with India’s second expansion plan but is being fast-tracked because of urgency shown by the armed forces.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also cleared the five-year expansion plan for which he had given the green signal earlier. The plan involves fresh accretion of 89,000 troops, with 400 officers.

This is estimated to cost over Rs 65,000 crore, making it one of India’s biggest one-time military expansion effort. The proposal is now with the Finance Ministry, and will be put up before the Cabinet Committee on Security.

Linked to this, the CCS has decided to focus on security of Indian islands with the larger view of securing maritime routes criss-crossing the Indian Ocean.

Two Army brigades are also being lined up for the Andamans while a battalion-strength presence is being considered for Lakshadweep alongside the Navy. Air Force assets are also being increased in these island territories, the sources said.

The second Army expansion on the China border will include setting up a corps headquarter in Panagarh, West Bengal, along with two more divisions. An independent armoured brigade along with an artillery division will be part of the set-up.

. . .
Interesting development. Long overdue. Not so much from an offensive point of view but as a deterrent. Locating it on Arunachal Pradesh is highly symbolic and marks India's determination to claim it as an integral part of the country.
We already swapped recognition of Sikkim-Tibet once before. Perhaps this will push towards a swap recognition of Taiwan-Arunachal Pradesh this time?

.
Brahmos will be lethal and will surely achieve her mission perimeters once fired.. this will be a great boost for indian forces in Arunachal,,,, kill is certain ... 3 Brahmos regiments will be enough for offensive or defensive operations... i hope MOD adds more...

which idiot would swap sikkim for tibet? have u seen their relative sizes?

was it nehru?

GREAT news but only one doubt. The 89000 figure seems to be too much for a single strike corps. Are these 89000 addition to the earlier 38000 soldiers inducted or includes that??I'm a bit confused.
And one Brahmos regiment is not enough,we need 4-5 more Brahmos regiments in NE at the least with numerous Prahar regiments.

this is the way to go....good move...10 years from now on and no one would dare to stare at us.

It was a recognition swap. Happened fairly recently in 2003. No Nehru was not involved, nor was the Congress party. It actually made perfect strategic sense. Tibet was already with China and Sikkim with India.

no, It was Vajpayee. It was one of the best decision India ever made .

Vajpayee pressured the chinese to give up their claim for Sikkim. In 2003 Sikkim, a disputed territory of india and china ,become an Integral part of India.China recognized Sikkim as a integral part of India. One of the first time where china gave up a disputed territory.

Finally....lol...
finally? the need to build up military strength on the Indo-Tibetan border has been small, and overstated. The Indian side has the advantage of being close to the border as well as having more air lift capability. The Brahmos that will get inducted into this new regiment will be the new ones capable of steep dives. This is not a significant build up. If a mountain corps gets added with light artillery that will send a real message.

.
how many missiles in one regiment??
like 1500 troops in one regiment...
Each of the first two BrahMos cruise missile regiments would have between four and six batteries of three to four Mobile Autonomous Launchers that can be connected to a general mobile command post.

And one Brahmos regiment is not enough,we need 4-5 more Brahmos regiments in NE at the least with numerous Prahar regiments.
NE is mountainous ares and hence require deployment of Block III version which got operational clearance last year. We should be happy that government passed this deal in this year because it was supposed to be signed in the next 5 year plan starting from march 2012. This means we can expect sanction of 1 more regiment next year. According to me IA will place atleast 2 regiments, 1 in Sikkim and other one in Arunachal.

I found this on Wiki thats why i am asking here whether its true or not ?

BrahMos II
BrahMos II is a stealth hypersonic cruise missile that is being currently under development that can fly at Mach 7. BrahMos II land variant design has been completed and 4 Land to Land test variants are ready to be tested. Rest of the variants will be tested in the successive years of 2012-13, design is projected to be completed by October 2011 [56] and will arm the Project 15B destroyers of the Indian Navy. In Russian navy project 21956 Destroyers are most likely to be equipped with BrahMos II.

If land variant enters in service by 2013-2014 it will be great. I mean IA can start deploying this new version while they can sell old supersonic version and with the money they get they can purchase new hypersonic version.
