BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese institute has successfully developed a camera featuring a 100-megapixel charge-coupled device (CCD) chip, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced on Wednesday.

It is currently China's highest pixel camera, the academy said in a statement.

The camera, IOE3-Kanban, was developed by the Institute of Optics and Electronics under the CAS and is capable of producing images with 10,240 x 10,240 pixels, the statement said.

Moreover, it is small and light, with its widest part measuring only 19.3 cm, the statement said, adding that it can be used at temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees centigrade to 55 degrees centigrade.

Its high sensitivity and high dynamic range (HDR) features mean it will be useful in high-resolution imaging in the fields of aerial mapping, city planning, disaster monitoring and intelligent transportation systems, the statement said.

The statement said the camera is equipped with advanced optical systems, camera control systems and high-capacity data recording systems, and it has proven successful in a recent trial use as a part of a national aerial remote-sensing system.

According to the statement, the institute also developed an 81-megapixel camera during the 10th Five Year Plan period (2001-2005), and the latest achievement took the researchers two years to develop.

that resolution is achieved by effectively using a few hundred cameras ie: hundreds of CCDs
this on the other hand is a single CCD with a 100 mega pixel resolution

the US has better chips, but the ARGUS-IS system does not show them off
 
from the article it says the camera widest part is only 19 cm, not big at all. chinese could get gigapixel level too if they combined 10 or more of those 100 megapixel ccds following the same concept. this is very good news for chinese uav program.
 
Chinese companies need to commercialize this product to kick japanese camera out of china. consumers don't need that high resolution camera. regular camera has resolution from 10-50 megapixel.

not yet. lol. the camera in the article is ccd camera. it's bulkier and consume 100x more power than than normal consumer cmos cameras on the market.
this type of camera is very expensive mostly use by professionals and higher end applications, because it's better at capturing fast moving scene and doesn't produce much noise in low light compare to cmos sensor.

If you think your SLR camera is capable of taking high-resolution photos, the folks over at the Institute of Optics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences are about to put your gear to shame.

That’s because they claim to have developed a 100-megapixel camera that captures 10,240 x 10,240 images, thanks to its square-format sensor. That’s a whole lotta megapixels (though we fear in a number of years we’ll look back at our marveling of this and laugh, whilst holding our gigapixel cameras:coffee:). In fact, it’s the highest megapixel camera in China, at the moment.

This beast is called the IOE3-Kanban, which sounds more like something you’d call a rocket ship, but we’ll roll with it. At it’s widest, the device measures in at about 7.6-inches and it’s lightweight, too. Reportedly, the device is capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -4 degrees to 131 degrees Fahrenheit, making it pretty rugged.

Speaking of rugged, the camera is designed to be used industrially. The fact it’s super sensitive and has got a high dynamic range makes it perfect for aerial mapping, disaster monitoring, and watching you sunbathe.

It should be noted that high-resolution options are available to those who really need them. Medium-format digital sensors like Phase One’s IQ280 is capable of shooting 80-megapixel images, but comes with a 5-digit price tag!

The IOE3-Kanban camera, developed by the Institute of Optics and Electronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is China’s challenge to the future of camera technology with 100 Megapixels, compared to 13 MP that makes heads turn at Micromax Canvas 4. Soon, we can bid adieu to traditional hi-tech heavy-lense cameras by professionals.

In March, China developed a lunar camera that can work in 120 degree centigrade temperature and useful to fix on space exploration missions. The camera will take another three years to be fully developed.

Now, the institute has come out with a new camera that is capable of producing images with 10,240 x 10,240 pixels, and the camera measures only 19.3 cm, state-run Xinhua reported. The camera is useful in aerial imaging, city mapping, city planning, Google Earth-equivalent, GPS and other uses one can visualize.

The institute has developed an 81-megapixel camera 8 years ago and npow the 100 MP camera is going to revolutionize the way photo world exists.

Each megapixel means one million pixels (dots). The camera will be useful in space exploration and planet mapping from China’s future space missions.

The Institute of Optics and Electronics has so far obtained over 500 scientific research awards including top prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in China. With 380 claimed patents, 180 authorized patents and more than 3,100 published articles, the institute is engaged in advanced research in optics technology.

The institute has developed a new lunar camera was early this year for Chang’e 3, which is being tested with Lunar Satellite Payload Subsystem. It takes three years to complete the camera.

The camera is one of the important payloads of Chang’e 3, it will take 360° color images of lunar surface and monitor rover vehicle, to provide information about the rover vehicle to researchers. Compared to other cameras, it is featured in small size, light weight, low power dissipation.

The camera can work in 120℃ high temperature in the day time on the moon, it can provide high quality dynamic and static image despite the effect of varying of altitude angle of the sun on camera. The static images will be sent back directly through specific channel, and the dynamic images will be compressed to 1:20 and then transmitted to the ground. The real-time images will reach the earth within permission delay time
