BEIJING — More than 500 illegal outdoor barbecues, which Chinese state media say cause "serious air pollution", have been destroyed in Beijing as part of an emergency program to alleviate the city's often hazardous pollution.

The raids were part of a three-month operation to supervise the barbecues, many of which are operated by ethnic Uighur Muslims from the restive Xinjiang province in China's west.

"Over 500 illegal barbecue grills in Beijing were destroyed on Tuesday amid the city's efforts to fight air pollution and lingering foggy weather," state media Xinhua reported on Tuesday.

Pollution often reaches hazardous levels and can cause long-term health issues. Chinese health officials say that lung cancer rates are rising among the city's more than 20 million residents.

China has adopted an emergency response program to try to reduce the pollution, including alternating days for cars with odd and even license plates to be on the road and closing schools when the smog is particularly heavy.

Smoke from factories and heating plants that encircle Beijing, winds blowing in from the Gobi Desert and fumes from millions of vehicles all contribute to the smog that often forms a thick blanket over the city.

Last winter the capital's smog was so bad it was dubbed the "airpocalypse", and there are concerns this winter will see a repeat after huge swathes of northeastern China ground to a halt in October when they were smothered by pollution.

Must be a terribly slow news day to actually print this? Unless it alludes to terrorism by barbecue

Do outdoor barbecues still alive in Beijing??? Outdoor barbecues were shut down many years ago in Dalian

have you guys actually been to China?

IF you did you would know these BBQs are actually ran by Han Chinese who dress as Uyghur people, not that there aren't any ran by them, but the number is small.

We have this perception that XinJiang BBQ is really good.

So operation failure on the smear campaign, btw it clearly says illegal, what does Indians do on Illegal activity? promote it?

Well done China. Illegal is illegal. If India did the same we would be in a much better state today.

Those real Uighur BBQ stands also sale other "substances" if you are a foreign customer. They also leave a mess of dripping grease from the grill on the floor.

They also force you to buy their "cake" with nuts in it if you ever inquire about it! Don't know what's it called. A couple of years ago, I was sightseeing in Naijing and saw those cake vendors. It looked delicious so I wanted to buy a tiny piece. Well they then cut a huge chunk and forced me to buy it! I refused and several of their kind gathered around me..... I was "demanded" to pay about 300 yuan for a piece of cake!!!!

What a horrible experience and the cake was as hard as rock! I now no longer ever approach them, never, ever. Those behaviors are gradually changing people's perspectives, including mine, from sympathy to apathy.

uhh, no, you can easily differentiate between Ughrs and non-Ughurs. I went to college in Beijing. There was an entire street occupied by Ughurs near my university. Smear campaign? Don't care about how the media wanna smear or not, I am used to it.

Oh btw, to some ignorant Indians, Beijing has literally no industry, let alone heavy industry. The pollution includes sand storm from Mongolia desert, then unregulated coal heating by some that still live in old quarters, car pollution, and other "lifestyle" pollution, due to sheer size of Beijing's population.

I didn't mean the hard rock cakes when I mentioned the "substances". AFAIK they only sell them to foreigners or ask them whether they are interested. It happened to me many times when I passed by. I think they are afraid that a Chinese might be a plain clothed police.

Never stopped ignorant Chinese talking about Indians and didn't what they were talking about except half a$$ed knowledge gained from readings to conform to their princeling bloated egos.

I have no idea who you were referring to. India is simply outside my radar and knowledge. That's why I hardly commented on news solely related to India. I don't need Indian news to bloat my nonexistent ego.

I think what you said accurately depicted some Indians here, conform to their thin ego that will easily crash and has to be continuously guarded by posting negative news from China, day in and day out. This also applies to some of your politicians and media that constantly compare India to China. But I totally understand and fully sympathize with some of you. Life must be too hard for some of you so they have to tell themselves that others are also suffering.

I knew what you were talking about. Plain clothed police? How come I never encountered one. Yeah drugs are prevalent in southwestern and western parts of China bordering Burma and Afghanistan.

They need a BBQ shop like this(using electric baking oven), not a outdoor BBQ.
That ¥2 outdoor BBQ is dirty and disgusting, not beef or lamb meat maybe cat or f@cking mouse ... EAT UR *** !
