China deploys Su-27 fighters in Tibet, can target key Indian air bases

New Delhi: China's all-weather fighter base in Tibet is now widening its range of options in the event of a conflict with India. Intelligence intercepts and satellite monitoring has confirmed that China may have to some extent overcome Tibet's extreme altitude and temperatures to operationalise an all-weather airfield near the Tibetan capital Lhasa.
The airfield is Gonkar, where China has deployed Su-27 fighters. Sources told CNN-IBN that the Gonkar airfield will enable Chinese fighters to widen their selection of Indian targets from Ladakh to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Sources say Gonkar is a direct response to the Indian Air Force stationing Su-30MKI fighters in Chabua and Tezpur in Assam. These fighters with a combat radius of about 1,000 km can hit targets deep in Tibet and mainland China.
"I would say the development of Gonkar airfield started well before the upgradation by us of our defence infrastructure, which has taken off only in the past five to seven years. Gonkar started off much earlier, they had started building underground hangars and defence and began positioning their fighter aircraft there," former RAW officer Jaidev Ranade said.

The Chinese Air Force Su-27 fighters were observed in the winters and now with the onset of summer, they are still there, which suggests that China has built up infrastructure for their support.
It is advantage China since Gonkar is at an altitude of 16,000 feet. The fighters can take off only with less weapons payload or fuel. China has probably solved the problem by stationing an aerial refuelling aircraft at Gonkar or nearby. This will increase the range and endurance of the Su-27s.
With recent developments at Raki Nala in eastern Ladakh, the implications are clear. China has been engaged in a deliberate upping of the diplomatic and military pressure on India, probing for weaknesses, testing India's resolve with the expectation that India will blink and back down.

China deploys Su-27 fighters in Tibet :omghaha: no problem we have lca,m-2000,mig 29 and su-30 rafale in future.:smart:

Chinese su 27 are at a disadvantage w.r.t to su 30 MKI, they cannot take off with max. pay load. They cannot match Su 30 MKI in Indo Tibet border.

Let those Chinese stretch their resources seems the fire has spread all around China :big_boss:

No idea why this was done, since China's focus is always on Japan & US. Anyway it is a few fighters less against them.

regarding the bolded part ...... what is the point of opening this base ??? i see no use of this base except for defensive purposes...coz its highly unlikely that after taking off from 16000 ft and then refuelling in mid air (considering take off with full payload n partial fuel capacity) and then blowing up some tents on indian side of the border.....
indians are in no position to attack (aerial or otherwise) china on the tibetan front, so i fail to see the objectivity of the whole operation.

If we are to strike into India. Saturation missile attack will be far more effective. Those PLAAF Su-27 is merely defensive nature against India deployment.

Precisely the operational of Beidou GPS eased the need of many attack aircraft asset needed for Sino- India scenario.

You see the deployment of DF-15 in TAR. Using GPS correction will prove far cheaper of the overall cost of the attack missile compare to tradition guided missile fitted with seeker.

Chinese Su-27s are there for quite a period and undertake patrols, no new thing..

Why should we afraid of su-27 when we are having more maneuverable & advanced su-30mki?? :lazy:

bro, in close combat su27 is superior... more maneuverable and speedy than su30mki (not comparing with armaments and long range dogfight)

Su27:

Maximum speed: Mach 2.35 (2,500 km/h, 1,550 mph) at altitude
Range: 3,530 km (2,070 mi) at altitude; (1,340 km / 800 mi at sea level)
Service ceiling: 19,000 m (62,523 ft)
Rate of climb: 300 m/s (54,000 ft/min)
Wing loading: 371 kg/m² (76 lb/ft²)
Thrust/weight: 1.07

Su30mki:

Maximum speed: Mach 1.9 (2,120 km/h or 1,320 mph[79]) at altitude; 1,350 km/h, 839 mph near ground level
Range: 3,000 km (1,620 nmi) at altitude; (1,270 km, 690 nmi near ground level; with no external fuel tanks)
Endurance: 3.75 hrs (up to 10 hrs with in-flight refueling)
Service ceiling: 17,300 m (56,800 ft)
Rate of climb: >300 m/s (>45,275 ft/min)
Wing loading: 401 kg/m² (82.3 lb/ft²)
Thrust/weight: 1.0

LCA is still in development.

M-2000 is worthless, which is why India is looking to replace them via the Tejas

Mig-29 has a worse service record than the Su-27. They both faced off during the Ethiopia-Eritrea war, and the Su-27 crushed the Mig-29.

Su-30, China has them too, it's called the Su-30MKK

Rafale is pretty much a dead deal, as the deal is on hold until further notice (i.e indefinitely). Even if it goes through, it'll be a significantly lower number than what India promised it would buy.

Is it true that MKI can't exceed Mach-2.....i was under impression it can fly beyond that. ???

yes true... actually their roles are different...

su27 role is more for air to air fight than ground attack.
on the other hand su30 role is more for ground attack than air to air fight.
