Membership of the NSG would bring India into the nuclear fold 42 years after it tested its first nuclear bomb.

NEW DELHI: China today denied that it was blocking India's bid for a membership in elite Nuclear Suppliers Groupor NSG and said it will "work" with the members of the 48-nation grouping as well as India to find a solution for India's entry into it.

Liu Zhenmin, China's Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, also said that the issue needs to be deliberated on among among relevant parties.

"That's not true. I think, the membership of NSG is not a new issue. It has been an issue for many years. This should be sorted out together with the members of the NPT," Liu Zhenmin told PTI when asked whether China was blocking India's entry to the elite club.

"Members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group should be party to NPT. So, I think China will also work with others including Indian colleagues together to find a solution.

"This should be consulted among relevant parties. As a very friendly country, China wants to have good cooperation with India at the international arena on all issues," the Chinese minister said. He is in Delhi to attend a multi-lateral legal meet.

Earlier this week, China claimed that several members of the group shared its view that signing of the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was an "important" standard for NSG's expansion.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang in Beijing had said that not only China but also a lot of other NSG members are of the view that NPT is the cornerstone for safeguarding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime. The Chinese action is apparently at the behest of Pakistan, which is also seeking an entry into the bloc.

India is not a party to Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, the international pact aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons, maintaining that it was discriminatory.

China in damage control mode after there were some media reports of china opposing indias entry into NSG.

It would be interesting to see what actual stand does china takes in coming days. Message from india is clear you are either with us or against us. If china opposes india then india will get the message loud and clear from china and then india is free to hit back at the time and event of indias choice. India will hit where it hurts and that is trade, its china's choice if it wants to risk the market of second most populous nation.

Personally i have always maintained that china and india both have more to gain from being together than being at the throat of each other. If china thinks otherwise then good luck to it.

Indians even now don't consider Chinese as enemies. Heck, we are almost very positive about Chinese.

But, the recent actions of Chinese have been extremely baffling. Support to terrorists is an extremely low point and has hurt their image very badly among Indians.

.
Damage already done for Chinese.

The fact that China was also supporting terrorists who attacked India has hurt Chinese Image bad in India.

There are already numerous groups aggressively advocating boycott of Chinese goods..
China doesn't care what India thinks of them, nor do they care what their image is within India.

India won't get in, as long as Chinese concerns aren't met.

What damage control? They're being diplomatic about the situation, but the message is clear that they don't care what India has to say.

It's also based upon historical examples. This isn't the first time China has essentially denied what India has sought.

India's trade deficit with China is close to 50 Billion USD and rising. All the goods are basically non essential items. India can hurt China badly if it comes to that. So there is that
You say that as if China can't retaliate, or India would be unaffected. What India would essentially be doing is declaring a trade war, one that India would not be able to win.

This is where you are incorrect. China does not have leverage on India. It does not own Indian Govt debt, has minimal assets in India and does not supply essential items like military hardware or security support. China has blocked it's IT and Pharma industry to India so it's not like Indian corporate sector will lose big money.

India on the other hand pays roughly 50 Billion USD to China in trade of mostly steel, electronics or electrical which can easily be substituted as it is Indians domestic suppliers are down in the dumps due to Chinese over supply.

China is already acting like our enemy for all intents and purposes by blocking all Indian efforts be it banning terrorists orgs or our membership to multilateral regimes. It's time India extracted some cost.

TBH Indian policy makers are too timid and are looking at future gains in terms of investments from China. I think they should watch China's action rather than it's words and take action on reciprocal basis.

India will hurt as it would have to import the same goods from elsewhere at higher prices.

Remember the less suppliers one has, the more the price of what you need goes up.

China needs India than we need the Chinese they dont want Uncle Sam to surround them, anyhow ur cheer leading does not change Global Geo Politics as in this game the Major players are pro India

As i said, most of the goods are non essential items, infact indian industry is already producing them but can't compete with China on prices. Indian consumers have to pay slightly more but that would be made up by difference in FX. Govt can further subsidise the Indian producers as China is doing.

Plus side- More indian production is more jobs, more consumption and more revenue. So overall it will be net positive,
