China decides to join Pakistan’s ‘Troika Plus’ meeting on Afghanistan 24 hours after turning down India's invite
Wed 10 Nov 2021

China’s decision to join the meet in Islamabad comes 24 hours after Beijing said it was unable to attend the India-convened security dialogue on Afghanistan on Wednesday because of “scheduling reasons”, joining ally Pakistan in skipping the meet.

China will join an extended “troika” meeting on Afghanistan to be hosted by Pakistan on Thursday, which will be attended by senior diplomats from the US and Russia, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

China’s decision to join the meet in Islamabad comes 24 hours after Beijing said it was unable to attend the India-convened security dialogue on Afghanistan on Wednesday because of “scheduling reasons”, joining ally Pakistan in skipping the meet.

“China supports Pakistan in hosting the extended troika meeting. We support all efforts conducive for stability in Afghanistan to building up consensus in the world,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin said at the regular ministry briefing on Wednesday.

“China’s special envoy to Afghanistan will attend the meeting,” Wang said without giving more details.

China’s special envoy for Afghan Affairs Yue Xiaoyong will lead a delegation to the meeting, Chinese state media reported.

China and Pakistan have been working closely in dealing with the new Taliban government in Kabul, which came to power in August, following a chaotic withdrawal of US troops from the war-torn country.

China’s snub to India on Wednesday’s security dialogue in New Delhi comes at a time when Sino-India bilateral ties are fraught over the ongoing military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

“Due to scheduling reasons, it is inconvenient for China to attend the meeting,” foreign ministry spokesperson Wang had said on Tuesday.

Reports from Islamabad said Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and national security advisor Moeed Yusuf will chair the ‘Troika Plus’ meeting on Thursday.

The representative of the four countries will also meet Afghanistan’s acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, Dawn newspaper reported.

Muttaqi is set to arrive in Islamabad on Wednesday.

It is the first visit to Pakistan by an Afghan minister since the Taliban seized control of Kabul in August, the Dawn report said.

In September, China’s special envoy Yue along with envoys from Russia and Pakistan, visited Kabul to hold talks with senior officials from the Afghan interim government.

Russian, Chinese and Pakistani special envoys to Afghanistan held another meeting in Moscow in October.

China to attend Pak Troika Plus meet after skipping India's Afghan dialogue
Pakistan will host senior diplomats from the US, China and Russia in Islamabad on Thursday to discuss the situation in neighbouring Afghanistan

China said on Wednesday that it will attend a meeting on Afghanistan convened by its all-weather ally Pakistan, after skipping a security dialogue hosted by India on the situation in the war-torn country, citing "scheduling reasons".

Pakistan will host senior diplomats from the US, China and Russia in Islamabad on Thursday to discuss the situation in neighbouring Afghanistan. The Troika Plus meeting will be attended by special representatives from all four countries, the Dawn newspaper reported.

Asked whether China would attend the meeting in Islamabad, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here that "China supports Pakistan in hosting the extended troika meeting".

"We support all efforts conducive for stability in Afghanistan to building up consensus in the world," he said, adding that China's special envoy to Afghanistan Yue Xiao Yong will attend the meeting hosted by Pakistan.

On Tuesday, Wang said that China would not attend the security dialogue on Afghanistan convened by India due to "scheduling reasons". He said China has notified the Indian side in reply.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Thursday chaired an eight-nation dialogue in New Delhi which was attended by officials from Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

All-weather allies China and Pakistan followed a coordinated policy after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan backing the Afghan militant group and getting international recognition for its interim government.

So, why didn't India invite Japan, Australia and USA to its meeting instead? And why wasn't Afghanistan officials invited?

Pakistan's Afghanistan meeting will have officials from USA, Russia, China and, most importantly of all, Afghanistan; all countries that matters.

That is some "in your face" humiliation for India.

All major powers are meeting in Islamabad, sharing notes, and having discussions with the new rulers of Afghanistan. And what is happening in Delhi ? LOL
New Delhi is real busy these days. They are hauling up any Muslims who celebrated Pak victory over Namibia 😏
Rest they are making sure no Urdu words are used in any TV Ads.
Huge security issues, Eh.🤔

If your second point about Urdu is true then, it is more urgent than ever to cleanse the entertainment industry of Pakistan from the ever increasing use of aweful hindi words. We must reverse this trend of speaking broken Urdu a la indian movies style. It is ruining our elegantly spoken Pakistani Urdu, that used to be spoken before exposure to indian media and society via internet and cable ruined it.
I will fully support them if they can fully purge Urdu from their movies, songs and poetry as well. :)
