China complains to Pyongyang after N Korean soldier kills villagers

Beijing has lodged a formal complaint with Pyongyang after a North Korean army defector sneaked across the border and killed four Chinese villagers with a handgun.

While relations between isolated North Korea and China, its only significant ally, have grown strained in recent years, violent conflict along their 1,420km-long shared border is rare.

The 26-year-old soldier crossed the Tumen river from North Korea into north-eastern China’s Jilin province at about 7.30am on 27 December, South Korea’s Dong-A Ilbo newspaper and Yonhap news agency reported, citing an anonymous source.

The soldier broke into the home of a 60-year-old ethnic Korean villager surnamed Xu and shot the man and his wife, killing them. He then entered the home of Xu’s neighbours – an elderly couple called Li – and beat them to death with his gun.

The soldier then entered a third house, owned by a villager surnamed Che, and stole 100 yuan (£10) and some food.

That night, Chinese soldiers and police shot the soldier in the stomach as he fled to the upper reaches of the Tumen. He remains unconscious in a local hospital.

China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying confirmed the incident at a press briefing on Monday afternoon, adding that China had “lodged representations” to North Korea and “will handle the case in line with relevant laws.”

Chinese media also reported the incident on Monday, underscoring the awkward, often self-contradicting nature of Beijing’s relationship with its northern neighbour. China has supported North Korea for decades, afraid that instability in Pyongyang could send waves of North Korean refugees streaming across the border.

Yet Chinese authorities also appear wary of the country’s 31-year-old leader, Kim Jong-un. Kim has ruled the country since his father, Kim Jong-il, died in 2011, and his early tenure has been marked by sabre-rattling and repeated nuclear tests.

RIP, my fellow:(

I guess the North Korean government has little to do with the unfortunate incident. What it needs to do is to take responsibility and compensate the slain Chinese citizens as well as being more in control of the army units that monitor the long border.

this happens almost every winter when the river is frozen, they can come and go very easily. usually it's just theft, stealing some food, TVs or motorcycles...but killing 4 for just 100 rmb and some food....

.
Although the four victims were ethnic Korean, but this kind of behavior is still intolerable.

China won't allow any foreigner to conduct the killing spree on its soil, and this North Korean deserter should deserve the severe punishment.

No Chinese soldiers at the border?

. . .

already lots of police, soldiers, border control there. it's a very long border with mountains and woods, and the river is quite narrow in width(less than 100m mostly). and i heard some tales about NKer killing chinese cops(they dont usually carry guns) before the looting.
until NK economy improves so that NKers don't have to kill for food in the winter, i don't expect too much positive change.

I hope they execute this murderous traitor. The mere fact that Chinese authorities took him to a hospital , despite his lecherous acts ... Is humbling.

if (huge if) he is not executed or sent back to NK, he'll definitely do life in a chinese prison, which ironically, is a huge upgrade in living standard compared with his life back in NK.
this is just pathetic...

It's surprising the Chinese cops do not carry guns guarding the NK-China border. That should change soon.

What's the highest Chinese made calibre handgun?

And I hope the PLA could shoot at those crazed North Korean soldiers who would try to trespass our border.

The fact that he did this to elderly citizens just boils my blood. He could have just taken the food or money , why did he have to kill them for?

Sorry if I sound harsh but even a bullet to the head is too humane a death for this traitor. He should be bayoneted to death.

chinese cops generally dont carry guns, even if they do, they prefer not to use it as first option since in most scenarios they just run into some guy with a fruit knife... i only see real guns on bodyguards of cash transport car near an ATM...

no need to be sorry, i wish him death too. he's living shame of humanity, needs to be eliminated.
and this guy is a soldier, not some hungry peasant... shouldn't military personal at least have some basic ethics of protecting unarmed civilian? yet he killed 4 for just 100 rmb....he is living proof of how f***ed up NK is today.
