China-built deep-water drilling rig achieves a first in South China Sea

New gas well a stable energy supply for Greater Bay Area
China's first self-developed deep-sea semi-submersible drilling platform recently completed its first deep-water well in the South China Sea, which analysts said will guarantee a stable energy supply for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The well, designated HYSY-981, also known as "Offshore Oil 981" is located in the eastern waters of the South China Sea, and is a high angle directional well. The well is 4,660 meters deep and reaches a true vertical depth of 2,529 meters, according to a news release on the website of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) on Wednesday.

This is the first deep-water well drilled by China-built drilling platform. Previously, all other deep-water oil or gas wells in Chinese territory have been drilled by foreign-made drilling platforms, it said.

After going into production, gas from the well will be transported to a terminal at Gaolan port in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, to supply the needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, said Zhao Chunyan, manager of the 981 platform.

"This is a remarkable achievement in the South China Sea. China has spent a lot on exploring energy in the region and this shows that we can finally use the resources to sustainably serve our development goal," Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, told the Global Times on Thursday.

Unlike some other regions in China which can take multiple measures to guarantee their energy supply, such as pipelines and domestic oil wells, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area relies heavily on imports from other countries through sea routes, Lin said. "So a gas well close to the area can greatly reduce the pressure on securing the stable energy supply."

Han Xiaoping, chief analyst at energy industry website china5e.com, said that exploring and drilling in such deep-water areas are very challenging and require very advanced technological capabilities and expertise.

"Not only do you need to put a lot of investment [into the project], but you also need to have advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities," Han told the Global Times, adding that China's fast progress in these areas "could be unprecedented."

Since it was built in 2012, the 981 platform has completed drilling 32 exploratory wells, but this is the first deep-water development well.

A development well is drilled in a proven producing area for the production of oil or gas. An exploratory well is a well drilled with the intent to discover a new petroleum reservoir.

The platform's first exploratory well was drilled in the eastern waters of the South China Sea the same year it was built.

In 2015, it entered waters in Southeast Asia to drill an exploratory well in waters that were 1,721 meters deep, according to the SASAC website.

Vietnam vessels 'ram China ships 1,400 times'
Chinese official says Vietnamese vessels have rammed ships close to an oil platform in disputed part of South China Sea.

The dispute over the South China Sea is the most serious since a brief war in 1979 [AFP]
China has accused Vietnam of ramming its ships more than 1,400 times in a disputed part of the South China Sea and said while it wanted good relations with its neighbour, it would not abandon principles to achieve that.

China claims most of the South China Sea and has over the past two years been taking various steps to assert its claim, angering Vietnam and the Philippines in particular.

Shortly after China brought its oil platform into the area, Vietnam sent a large number of vessels into the area, China's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

"There were as many as 63 Vietnamese vessels in the area at the peak, attempting to break through China's cordon and ramming the Chinese government ships a total of 1,416 times," the ministry said.

China has asked Vietnam more than 30 times to "stop its illegal disruption", the ministry said.

A Vietnamese fishing boat sank on May 26 during a confrontation not far from where China has towed the oil rig, accompanied by a cordon of Chinese vessels, 240km off Vietnam.

Scores of Vietnamese and Chinese ships have squared off around the oil platform since it was towed to the area in early May.

EXCELLENT.
What better way to promote harmony than inter-racial marriages.
China need more women.
Send more Vietnamese women to the homes of these poor peasant Chinese farmers.
They will look after your women better than you.
At least China won't send your women to fight and DIE IN BORDER WAR like what Vietnam did, while their COWARDLY Vietnamese men HIDE in Cambodia.

Well at least now you realized the Chinese are NOT RACIST like you.
The Chinese were friendly to all.
That's why you find Chinese diaspora all over South East Asia centuries ago but NOT the Vietnamese.
The Chinese were sailing to the Philippines and beyond and NOT the other way around.
So its Chinese in VIETNAM, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and NOT the other way around.

Don't you think it is RIDICULOUS that Vietnam now claim that the South China Sea islands belong to them when Vietnamese are nowhere to be found in South East Asia from centuries ago till now.
Better return your STOLEN islands and beg for forgiveness before getting spanked by China again.

Poor peasant Chinese farmers did not discriminate against the women Vietnam sent over to them.
Your Vietnamese women were well treated, no discrimination, no dangerous ramming with water cannon,
only ramming with LOVE.

Has the ramming stopped the Chinese from digging gas in that region?

@waz @The Eagle
Hi sir, it will be very nice if you could take a look at the posts/pictures from @cochine
I do not think hair cut, or marriage news, are relevant to this thread. It will be very nice if you could take a look and take some proper actions to stop his behaviors like this. Many thanks!
