China builds space-based internet services using 80 small satellites

Source: Global Times Published: 2018/3/16

The Fourth Academy of the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation announced Friday the building of space-based internet services using 80 small satellites, the China Youth Daily reported.

Zhang Di, academy deputy director, said cellular mobile communication technology is unable to provide internet on more than 80 percent of the land and 95 percent of the ocean. But with the new service, people on the ocean, islands and deserts can gain internet access.

Indeed, China has a number of inhabitable islands in the SCS.

That's out of box solution and it can help a lot of people in distress but how much area will it cover?

Probably, initially, to be available across China including China's waters in the SCS. I am not sure if they aim global coverage.

Well anyone will do it..If not China then someone from USA, Europe, etc
It seems Elon Musk is already up to the task.
Get Ready for 5G Anywhere in the World: SpaceX Begins StarLink Internet Project

G'day mate

I think you have mistaken, SpaceX is planning a 5G SatCOM worldwide, on the other hand, China is building a SatCom network in China, maybe its broadband or maybe it's 4 or 5G, we don't know as the OP did not states its speed.

SatCom internet have been in Australia for ages. I used IPSTAR Satellite NBN service for 2 years now when I was in NT outback or out at sea where there are virtually no landline or mobile connection. I think China is building the same thing, but who knows, maybe they can upgrade to 5G in latter day?

How does it work? Do you simply have a small satellite dish like the HD TV ones or is it dishless like satellite radio? Satellite radio is standard in most cars here. No dish and you can drive across the country listening to the same 150+ radio stations in HD digital. If this could work with 5G internet it would be mind blowing and save billions on infrastructure.

There are web browsers in Tesla cars so I can see why Elon Musk is interested in this. I'm pretty sure he wants a dishless solution.

Good day,

No mate, I was also taking about a worldwide or global service so that a person can seamlessly travel around the globe without breaking the bank. I recently visited Australia for a leisure/business trip and I had to pay a hefty amount for data during the flights for onboard data service and also using two different phones with different sims to stay connected.

cheers!!

Gday mate

Not sure how other company works, but my service give me a modem like usb tranceiver and so i can plug in my laptop and use their service this way

They also offer satellite hotspot for my plan but that is just too expensive and the equipment is too bulky to fit in my travel bag

Its different with satellite tv or radio where that is a simple oneway transmissions
