China’s top battery producer plans to boost its presence in the aspiring electric-vehicle hub of Indonesia by partnering with local state-owned groups to build a US$5.97bil mining-to-batteries complex.

A unit of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. will join PT Aneka Tambang and PT Industri Baterai Indonesia on the project that spans everything from nickel mining to battery materials, recycling, and an EV batteries factory.

The Southeast Asian nation is aiming to become a major player in the electric-vehicle supply chain linked to its massive reserves of nickel, a vital battery material.

CATL already has some involvement in Indonesia, while Chinese firms including Tsingshan Holding Group play a major role in the country’s nickel sector.

"The Indonesia project is an important milestone for CATL as we expand our global footprint, and it will become an emblem of the everlasting friendship between China and Indonesia,” Robin Zeng, founder and chairman of CATL, said in a statement on Friday.

The project will be based in Indonesia’s North Maluku province. The joint venture still needs approval from the companies’ shareholders and from regulators. – Bloomberg

I read recently that this company has successfully created a commercially viable sodium based battery for grid storage type applications. Great achievement

Huge investment
However surprised why Indonesia can’t do it alone? It’s a strategic industry, isn’t?

The sodium battery tech is not Indonesian. It is completely CATL.

This news of CATL setting up a manufacturing site in Indonesia is separate from CATL's sodium battery tech. This is just setting up manufacturing for production of various EVs assembled in Indonesia.

For example Toyota is using BYD battery technology for Toyota's own full electric vehicles like BZ4X... in fact in the BZ4X case, pretty much the entire vehicle is made by BYD but branded as Toyota. Whichever car makers are also assembling in Indonesia may access CATL batteries easier this way. Mostly supply chain and business related for setting up a CATL manufacturing plant in Indonesia as well. I think CATL is manufacturing in many other parts of the world or at least planning to. For example US wants a CATL manufacturing where agreement demands CATL trade technology as well for that.

Chinese company brings money, technology and expertise that is nothing wrong in that. Catl wants to make sodium battery? Ok, will be interesting. from the development sodium is still in infancy, vastly inferior to lithium or nickel battery.

There is no mention that this nascent technology by CATL will be made available in this particular joint venture.

The JV deal was concluded because both parties will profit from it based on agreed terms and conditions.

So stop jumping to any conclusion unless you are saying foreign investors are not welcome in Indonesia.

As least the present Indonesian Government under President Joko Widodo is showing his maturity and his belief in free trade and did not interfere because of a difference in opinion in geopolitical thinking.

Did I say it will?

I think you should read over what I wrote. I said CATL is only setting up a factory here for manufacturing. There is no tech transfer or anything like that.

You don't need to.

When you are manufacturing items like batteries.

Technologies and training needed be transferred and provided in order for the manufacturing process to be completed. Otherwise the products cannot be manufactured.

Of course the core technology remained with the Chinese partner.

But the US loved to refer to such practice as forced transfer of technology.

That is why even their own US companies involved in the JV are laughing at the US Admin.

It just making a battery, right? No technology involved. Any tom , dick , harry can do it....
He will never understand the level of science and technology involved in the production process and equal it to preparing a bowl of beef pho.
