BEIJING — In response to President Bush’s meeting with prominent Chinese dissidents at the White House, Beijing on Thursday sharply condemned Washington for interfering in China’s domestic affairs and accused American legislators of politicizing the Olympics.

Shortly after Mr. Bush held talks Tuesday with the five dissidents — Harry Wu, Wei Jingsheng, Rebiya Kadeer, Sasha Gong and Bob Fu — the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution urging China to honor its pledge to improve human rights before the Games, which begin Aug. 8. The resolution passed 419 to 1.

During a news conference Thursday, Liu Jianchao, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, described the House measure as “odious conduct” and said the United States should stop “making use of so-called religious and human rights” issues to score political points, Agence France-Presse reported.

The Chinese authorities also remained resolute about their decision to maintain a firewall on the Internet and limit access for journalists covering the Olympics. Senior officials with the International Olympic Committee, or IOC, have said they were stunned to learn Wednesday that Beijing’s longstanding pledge to provide foreign reporters with unfettered access would not be honored.

Kevan Gosper, a former Olympic athlete from Australia and the chief of the IOC press commission in Beijing, said he had been assured that visiting journalists would have no limitations on their Internet use during the Games. But he said Wednesday that other IOC officials, whom he did not identify, had agreed to let some Web sites be blocked. Olympic organizers say they are trying to convince the government to reconsider its decision to limit access.

In an interview Thursday, Sun Weide, a spokesman for the Beijing Olympic organizing committee, said reporters arriving in China in the coming week should not expect access to sites that discuss topics such as Tibet, Taiwanese independence or the Falun Gong, a banned religious group that China has deemed an “evil cult.” Such sites, he said, “contain information that is in breach of Chinese law.”

He also stressed that the number of banned sites were few — although he declined to provide a precise number — and he insisted that reporters would have no limitations in covering athletic events. Mr. Sun said the authorities would not monitor the personal e-mails of reporters at the Olympics’ main press center. “We always have been following international law on such matters,” he said.

If China has a good human rights record, it has nothing to worry about. The US keeps making allegations like this.

My Pakistani friends here accuse india of not being transparent and not allowing foreign media into Kashmir. Why are they silent with regards to Tibet and China? an open debate with restraint and caution is the need of the hour.

because US has asked for more freedom for the people, you are saying it is scared of China's rise. what relationship has 'more freedom for people' got with 'economic development of China'? if you ask me, it will further aid china to develop even more.

With due respects, instead of debating on the topic, you are deviating and putting this
on 'economic rivalry'.

Alright i Could be wrong..but i have been doing a little research on this Whole Tibet Fiasco thats been going on for the past 1 year.

I believe this is nothing more than a complete Propaganda by the Western Media. Anyone who has done a little research can tell you how much the Chinese have actually helped the Tibetans. They Built Rail Roads, provided electricity, allowed special seats for the Tibetans to get into Higher education when a lot of the Chinese themselves are deprived of those rights.

This whole Free Tibet thing is really annoying when you think about how exactly are these Tibetans going to survive without hina? Just what exactly does TIBET produce aside from a bunch of monks that actually will help them become a prosperous country? They have Nothing......

Also alot of the people are saying that videos where you see the Chinese people beating the monks are actually the Nepali Police but i could be wrong.

Check this video out by Penn and Teller.

I agree with some of what you said, not all of it.

I agree that Tibetan society was feudal in nature....but so was Chinese society before it began to modernize. Are you implying that Tibetans are incapable of modernizing by themselves?

The whole "chinese build roads and schools" argument is exactly the same justification that the Brits used to colonize the world. Heard of "white man's burden"? Now its the "Chinaman's burden" to spread the enlightenment among "lesser" peoples.

The Dalai Lama is no villain. He is simply being vilified by the CPC for their own purposes. He has never spoken against Democracy. Tibetan exiles in India live in a democratic society and are not in any conflict with it.
However, he remains the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Tibetans have withdrawn into a shell because of the Chinese onslaught on their culture and traditions. Instead of modernizing, they are clinging more and more to their old ways, like any other colonized society would.

...

By default, a religious leader is a state leader for Tibetan.

Dalai Lama claimed many times that he would resign, and he never did. Why can't he call for election of Lama among all Tibetans to show his democracy?

Did India and CIA help Dalai Lama in the bloody rebellion later 1950s, by supplying him with weapons and trainings?
