Patent push creates benefits on all sides

Chinese entities submitted 22,292 patent applications to the European Patent Office (EPO) last year, according to the office's latest tally. This figure puts China among the top five sources of EPO applicants.

China and the EU currently cooperate on a number of fields related to intellectual property and both sides can benefit greatly from these agreements. First, they make it convenient for European companies to invest in China's information technology market. Second, Chinese enterprises face a smoother road to development in Europe once their patents are protected by relevant local laws. Additionally, a fairer and more open market between the two countries can promote trade and technology sharing.

Of course, Chinese groups still have room for improvement. Firstly, Chinese parties need to catch up with their foreign counterparts in emerging industries like electronic equipment and biotechnology. Second, authorities and businesses need to promote positive interactions between scientific research groups and commercial organizations.

In the meantime, Chinese enterprises also need to focus on developing innovative new products rather than merely exploiting low labor and material costs.

Could not have said it better. I guess, a further China-Japan integration and cooperation on science and technology will create an ginormous entity that the US-EU combined would find harder to compete.

We should definitely go beyond this. Beyond politics.

Scientific & Technological Exchange and Cooperation

Non-governmental scientific and technological exchanges between China and Japan were launched in early 1960's, which were conducted mainly through seminars. At that time, Japanese technicians used to come to China to introduce Japanese new practical technology and discuss with Chinese technicians. The scale of this kind of exchanges has gradually expanded each year. This channel, kept until the mid-70s', became one of the most important channels for Chinese technicians to gain knowledge about the development of the science and technology in the world.

Since the normalization of bilateral relations, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the operating organization for science & technology cooperation between the Japanese government and the developing countries, started to establish contacts with China. In 1979, Japan sent a scientific delegation to China for a study tour. In May, 1980, the two governments signed an agreement for scientific and technological cooperation.

Sino-Japanese scientific and technological cooperation has so far witnessed long-standing progress and has become an important element for the bilateral cooperation and contacts. The cooperation between the two governments in this field includes five aspects: bilateral agreements of scientific and technological cooperation, cooperation in the areas of environmental protection and nuclear energy, cooperation through JICA and cooperation between the involved departments of the two governments. Non-governmental scientific and technological exchanges have also grown to a quite extensive scale. Chinese delegations and groups consisting of 10,000 personnel have been sent to Japan annually for this purpose.

Impressive. Despite western media and even some overly-nationalistic Japanese media, the fact of the matter is that silent yet gradual integration is observed. Well, I'm sure that when both sides can put aside our minor differences regard the Diaoyutai / Senkakus, both sides can ramp up our already flourishing trade as well as other important demographic cooperative agreements. Afterall, the #1 popular destination of Japanese traveling abroad is no other than China. Not Europe or America, but China. This speaks volumes.
