Plane hijacked in China

(CNN) -- The Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported Sunday that a plane has been hijacked in the remote northwestern province of Xinjiang, the scene of clashes last month between Han Chinese and the Uyghur ethnic group.

But now the reports mention that it is not a hijack just a bomb threat, should wait to get the clear picture, hopefully the situation would be under control soon.

Afghanistan plane scheduled to Urumqi bomb threatened

URUMQI, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- An Afghanistan plane scheduled to Urumqi of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was bomb threatened Sunday, according to armed police sources in Xinjiang.

The sources previously told Xinhua the plane was hijacked.

The Urumqi airport has received an order from the aviation authorities to deny the plane's landing in the city.

Armed police and emergency vehicles, however, have rushed to the airport for emergency response.

CHINA (BNO NEWS) — A plane was hijacked in China’s restive region of Xinjiang on Sunday, according to state media.

The agency sent out a brief “flash” alert saying a plane had been hijacked, without giving further details. It was not known how many people were on board or if the plane was on the ground or in the air.

(CNN) -- A bomb threat forced authorities in China's remote northwestern Xinjiang Autonomous Region to bar a plane from landing in the city of Urumqi, the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported Sunday.

Citing police sources, Xinhua said the plane -- which was en route from Afghanistan -- initially had been reported as hijacked.

Aviation authorities have issued an order prohibiting the plane from landing in Urumqi, the news agency said. However, police and emergency vehicles rushed to the airport to respond if necessary.

Xinjiang was the scene of clashes last month between Han Chinese and the province's Uyghur population, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group.

My sources tell me that the plane has been refused entry into Chinese airspace.

And, I believe the plane is not from a Chinese air carrier.

Bomb threat on plane bound for Chinese province rocked by ethnic riots

A flight to Urumqi, in the troubled north-western Chinese region of Xinjiang, has been forced to return to Afghanistan tonight following a bomb threat, state media have reported.

The official news agency, Xinhua, originally said a flight had been hijacked, but withdrew that newsflash. It cited police sources in Xinjiang for both claims. The plane has now landed in Kandahar, according to "diplomatic sources" cited by the agency.

The news comes around a month after vicious ethnic riots in the regional capital of Urumqi killed 197 people, and injured around 1,700.

Xinhua said that aviation authorities had ordered Urumqi airport to refuse the plane to land, but that armed police and emergency vehicles had rushed to the airport.

On Tuesday, officials said that security forces had prevented five organised terrorist attacks on civilians in Xinjiang, although they gave few details.

According to Xinhua, police forces and state security authorities crushed five organised plots in Urumqi, Kashgar, Aksu and Ili.

The news agency said that "a group of suspects" had been captured, but gave no number for arrests or detentions. It added that "guns, controlled knives, explosives and materials advocating violence and terrorism" were seized.

Last March, senior officials from Xinjiang reported that flight attendants had foiled an attempted attack on a Chinese passenger jet flying from Urumqi, which made an emergency landing. A 19-year-old Uighur woman was later blamed for the attempt.

While some analysts treated the reports with scepticism, and human rights groups warned that the government had a history of equating terrorism with separatism and even cultural expression, a report by the intelligence firm Stratfor argued: "The slow release of information about this incident and the fact that it was labeled a militant plot well after the fact suggest that the plot was genuine. It seems the Chinese themselves are only slowly coming to understand the implications of the incident and the details of what occurred seem to be supported by accounts that have appeared on various blogs from people who were onboard the plane."

The plane belongs to an afgan airline and set out from kabul with over 100 afgan people and 3 chinese passengers to go to urumqi. When news came out that there was a bomb threat, the flight plan changed and the plane went back to kandaha instead of kabul due to the weather of the latter was not suitable for landing.

Urumqi-bound plane diverted after bomb threat

Armed police vehicles are seen on a road as they withdraw from the Urumqi Diwopu International Airport after a China-bound Afghan plane, threatened by a bomb, was denied to land in the city.[Xinhua]

A plane flying from Afghanistan to Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, reported a bomb threat and was refused permission to land, Xinhua news agency said Monday, citing armed police sources in Xinjiang.

The sources previously told Xinhua the plane was hijacked. The Urumqi airport has received an order from the aviation authorities to deny the plane's landing in the city. Armed police and emergency vehicles, however, have rushed to the Urumqi Diwopu International Airport for emergency response.

The China-bound Afghan plane with Kam Airlines later landed on the airport of Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan Sunday night, said an official in Kabul International Airport.

The official who was reluctant to disclose his name said the plane scheduled from Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, to Urumqi has already landed on Kandahar airport.

"The plane would return to Kabul after two hours," he added.

The airport official said the plane made the unexpected landing due to some "mechanical problem".

Meantime, president of Kam Airlines, Zamarai Kamgar, told Xinhua that it is the first flight day for Kam from Kabul to Urumqi and the plane was refused by Kyrgyzstan to pass its territory.

The Boeing-767 plane was carrying more than 200 passengers, including five Chinese.

"The plane chose to land in Kandahar city at first step because weather condition in Kabul was not suitable at that time," Kamgar added.

"The plane has made landing efforts in Kabul airport, but failed. Maybe it is because of strong wind," a Chinese passenger named Pan Dongjie told Xinhua from Kandahar.

"Now all the passengers are asked to stay on board," Pan said. "I have known about the bomb threat. I want to leave the plane as soon as possible."

Kam Air was founded in 2003 as Afghanistan's first private commercial airline. It serves a number of international and domestic routes with six aircraft and 350 employees, it says on its website.

Afghan plane back to Urumqi after threat

A bomb-threatened Afghan plane arrived in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Monday night after the security threat was cleared.

The plane, belonging to the private company Kam Air, returned to Afghanistan after being denied landing in Urumqi on Sunday because of a bomb threat.

"Security check shows there is no bomb on the plane," President of Kam Air, Zamarai Kamgar, told Xinhua. He also urged the Afghan security authority to investigate the incident completely.

The Boeing-767 plane carried 168 passengers, including five Chinese.

It took off from Kabul at 8:10 p.m. Monday (Beijing Time) and arrived in Urumqi safely at 11:40 p.m..
