Chennai: After Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore, it is now the turn of Chennai to welcome the metro service. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa flagged off the test run of the Chennai metro at the Koyambedu metro depot on Wednesday afternoon. The four coach rake assembled in Brazil by Alstom was sent to Chennai in early 2013. The rake is made of stainless steel and has a sitting capacity of 176 while 1000 people can stand.
The first phase of Chennai metro from Koyambedu to Alandur is almost nearing completion and the service is expected to start early 2014. Of the 4 coaches, one will be a ladies coach. The coaches are differently abled friendly and such persons can ask for the coach to stop longer at a particular stop by the mere press of a button near the doors.
The coaches are fully air conditioned, the doors are automatic and will not open when the coach is in motion. The coaches are also fitted with 4 CCTV cameras. While the body of the coach is made of stainless steel, the non metal parts are fire retardant.
The coaches have a special protection system which will ensure that minimum distance between 2 trains is always maintained. The lighting in the coaches would adjust as per ambient light. The coaches also have a lit route map to help passengers. There is also a special communication panel through which passengers can speak directly to the train operator in case of an emergency.
Chennai metro officials said that one of the distinguishing features of these rakes is that it has luggage racks for office goers which other metro trains currently operating in India do not have.
