KARACHI: Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, the man who coined the name, ‘Pakistan’, and is distinguished as one of the first proponents for the creation of a separate state for Muslims, has not been given due respect by historians. This was discussed by speakers at a seminar at the Arts Council of Pakistan on Saturday night.

The participants comprised political scientists, history experts and columnists who agreed on the notion of bringing back the remains of Ali’s body from Cambridge, UK, to Pakistan and giving him a burial place in the Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum. The seminar titled, “Quaid-e-Azam ka Pakistan aur Chuadhry Rehmat Ali ka Aizaz,” was organised by the Chaudhry Rehmat Ali Memorial Society to commemorate the leader.

The speakers noted that despite his achievements and struggle for the creation of the country, Ali could not get the honour and respect he deserved. University of Karachi department of mass communication’s chairperson, Dr Tahir Masood said that Ali not only coined the name, Pakistan, but also gave the idea of a separate state for the Muslims of India in his pamphlet, ‘Now or Never’.

“The arguments put forth by Rehmat Ali for the case of creation of Pakistan in this pamphlet were the same used later by the Quaid-e-Azam to convince the British and the Congress,” said Masood.

Quoting historian KK Aziz, Masood said that Quaid-e-Azam used several sentences from ‘Now or Never’ in his address on Pakistan Resolution Day, during the Muslim League session at Lahore. He added that Muslim League leaders had no new vision, argument or point in favour of Pakistan, besides those already presented by Ali. He was a visionary researcher and thinker and a true sympathiser of the Muslims of India.

A part of Now or Never pamphlet

"At this solemn hour in the history of India, when British and Indian statesmen are laying the foundations of a Federal Constitution for that land, we address this appeal to you, in the name of our common heritage, on behalf of our thirty million Muslim brethren who live in PAKSTAN – by which we mean the five Northern units of India, Viz: Punjab, North-West Frontier Province (Afghan Province), Kashmir, Sind and Baluchistan." Jinnah was against disintegration of any part of Indian territory originally and he in fact ridiculed the idea of Pakistan and rebuffed Rahmat Ali who sought Jinnah`s support for the formation of a separate state for the Muslims ..

It was the first session of the third Round Table Conference that Ch. Rahmat Ali distributed leaflets advocating Pakistan to the British members of parliament and the Indian delegates . All the Muslim delegates opposed Rahmat`s plans . Jinnah ridiculed it

Rahmat Ali invited Jinnah to a black-tie dinner at London`s Waldorf Hotel in the spring of 1933 . He had arranged Banquet with its oysters and un-Islamic chablis at his own expense hoping to persuade Jinnah to take over his movement . But Rahmat received a "chilly rebuff"

Annoyed and agitated , he described Jinnah as the Boozna (a baboon) of Bombay

Jinnah later borrowed the ideal of Rahmat Ali , his arguments and his nomenclature without even naming him .

Jinnah was bitterly criticized and called a traitor by Rahmat Ali .

Ali issued a pamphlet on 9 jun 1947 regarding Pakistan and the main target of attack was Jinnah :

"In accepting the British plan , Mr Jinnah has acted the Judas and betrayed , bartered and dismembered the Millat ........ His crime is too black to be whitewashed ... its consequences are too calamitous to be forgotten by the Millat ... his attempts are too crude to deceive history " (K.K. Aziz , Rahmat Ali - A biography p.262)

Rahmat also said :
"We found all our hopes reduced to dust and ashes by the folly and foul play of one man alone Quisiling-i-Azam-Jinnah "
(K.K. Aziz , Rahmat Ali - A biography p.323)

IoK and Occupied East Punjab is missing from current Pakistan. Pakistan made blunder by accepting current smaller Pakistan. No wonder Rehmat was unhappy.
I have never accepted Jinnah as my Quaid or Baba E Qom but this man I will happily call all that and salute, true father of the nation.

coining the term is disputed. his idea for a common wealth was itself, a much bigger dream. and above all he was no leader. enough said to this stupid cunt thread !

Looking at the text books of my nieces and nephews I m appalled what are we making them into?

There is very little history. Very little about ideology of Pakistan and nothing about the leaders who made Pakistan a reality. I m talking about an elite school here.

Our kids will be confused and easily swayed by cultural influence brought to us by channels like Geo if we dont teach them history, their identity and the reason this country was created. At this moment, we are creating just robots.

Ch. Rehmat Ali was a religious bigot , his idea of Pakstan was that of an "Islamic Theocracy" ...... Jinnah didn`t agree with Rahmat`s ideology ..... Rahmat did not agree with Jinnah and his vision .......... Some times reading history is "helpful" my friend ;)

The real Quaid of Pakistan, Real Baba e Qom, but that won't go down too well with Many here, someone who related to these lands and was a native not some Gujrati.

Just like any success #Pakistan was a 'team effort'. Unfortunately we Pakistanis have an extremely bad habit of dismembering history and forgetting people who stood up for us when no one else did, at a time when were no bodies, countryless, leaderless, identity less. Once when we get to build a Pakistan of our aspirations our founding fathers shall get their due recognition and stature. A real nation shall never forget those who stood up when everyone else was too fearful of doing so. I pay homage to Chaudhry Rehmat Ali for his role in the creation of our country.

@Azlan Haider

Political differences emerge under harsh circumstances. Nonetheless Ch.Rehmat Ali's role in Pakistan movement is written in stone and cannot be overshadowed by his personal opinions we may or may not agree with.

What dispute? Infact Pakistani children books teach wrong history of Iqbal dreaming about Pakistan and next day telling Jinnah about it. Iqbal probably was never in favor separate country, not to forget he didnt include Kashmir in NW state.

So when everyone was thinking about being with Bharat, Rehmat dreamed big long before anyone else did.

Jinnah alone did not create Pakistan “with the help of his secretary and typewriter" ......... However when he started to re-organize the Muslim League in 1941, He only had a type writer and an assistant ........ Unfortunately , It was pretty much a "one man show" [or at least it was made to appear so]...... We lost everything when Jinnah died and our country was taken over by a bunch of opportunists.....

I believe that Allamah Mashriqi , Rahmat Ali and many others played a very important role in the Independence Movement , But the names of all those who were against Jinnah (for any reason) were deliberately omitted from the books of history .......
