Chattogram Port, the country’s premium sea port, has advanced six steps in terms of annual throughput of containers in this year’s Lloyd’s List, world’s oldest journal on port and shipping.

Chattogram sea port has been ranked the 64th busiest among the top 100 container ports across the world.

The latest 2019 edition of Lloyd’s List of One Hundred Ports has been published recently, tallying up the annual container throughput figures of the world’s elite port facilities in 2018.

According to Lloyd’s List report, Chattogram sea port handled a total of 2,903,996 TEUs (twenty equivalent units) of containers in 2018, up from 2,667,223 TEUs in the previous year (2017) posting 8.9 per cent annual growth in container handling.

Such growth helped the port in advancing six steps from its last year’s 70th position. Earlier, it was ranked 71st in the 2017 ranking, while 76th and 87th in the 2016 and 2015 editions of the Lloyd’s List report.

Increased foreign trade in recent years have been hailed by the port users for such growth in transport of containers through the port.

They underscored the need for infrastructural development as well as logistics supply for the port to cope with the increasing container transport.

Colombo will be top 10 or atleast 15 from current 24th when under it's new proposed uniform operation of 4 of it's main terminals come in to fruition end of 2019.. And with the new addition of Colombo South Terminal probably mid 2020's it's capacity will increase further

Atm the 4 operate independently managed by private companies

That is very impressive. Sri lanka is only south asian country that I admire for put it shit together despite face so many challenges. I hope sri Lanka becomes Singapore some day. It would have been by now if there was no civil war.

Looking at the list you can see almost half of the busiest port belong to china or south east Asia. That's the future.

You aware that Sri Lanka had to hand over it's port to China for 99 years as it could not pay back the loan for it?

Sri Lanka also has external debt to gdp ratio of 66%. It's economy crawls at only 3-4% a year while at still middle-income and shows all signs of having fallen into the "middle-income trap"

BD is at only 10% external debt to gdp ratio with impressive 8% growth rate.

Sri Lanka may have had a civil war fuelled by India but BD only became independent in 1971 and rinsed by Pakistan in the 24 years before that. I would bet on BD over Sri Lanka any day.

You are a nutcase. Do you have any idea how much they suffer for almost 30 yrs because of civil war and despite that they have almost 100 percent literacy rate highest human development then any one else in south Asia and probably the best skill human capital as well. so yes we have lot to learn from sri Lanka.

Dude, you have little understanding of history and current economic trajectories.

BD suffered just as much if not more during the 24 years in was under Pakistan. Sri Lanka economy has been built pretty much on debt(nearly 70% GDP to external now for them) and that has totally crushed their economy. Sensibly all BD governments chose not to follow this model.

It is obvious you have little understanding of mathematics and economics with your total inability to counter my reasoned numerical arguments.

Come back when you are prepared to talk serious.

Debt is never a problem as long as you manage and can repay. What is more important is human capital and skill work force which they got we dont. Our quality of growth is not sustainable yet and education quality not up to standards. Iceland was almost broke in 2008 but they get back on track because they have skill work force. Dont get too excited just because bd has 8 percent growth only one year after almost 50 years of independent.

Jakarta New Priok Port not fully operational, by 2023 they will have capacity around 19.5 million TEUs

Capacity aside, so far Indonesian exporter using third hand parties such as Singapore to shipping their cargoes. Well just wishing our authority can do reform and give incentive to attract more customer

What Chicken Vindaloo boy does'nt realize is google does have it's limitations when it comes to valid info.. The port that was leased out to China is not Colombo but Hambantota.. Thats primarily a bunkering and a transhipment port

Colombo port is fully owned by the GOSL and it's terminals are managed by private public partnership companies..
so i was essentially discussing about that

On a side note Sri Lanka just graduated to a upper middle income nation with a GDP per Capita of over $4000.. So despite the recent political upheavals and instability it's still moving forward, ofcause the country can do much better, But you and i know political changes can happen over night
