Serious violations of indigenous peoples' rights by the United States, Canada and Australia are not just something of the past, but a matter of chronic and systemic racism that continues to this day, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Friday.

Speaking at a video side-event co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of Venezuela and the Permanent Mission of China in Geneva during the 49th Session of the Human Rights Council, minister Jiang Duan of the Chinese Mission called on the countries to uproot the pernicious legacies of colonialism, eradicate systemic racism and discrimination to ensure the equality and rights of the indigenous peoples.

As is well known, Jiang said, by means of killings, displacements, and forced assimilation, the United States has systematically deprived American Indians of their basic rights, including the right to life, political, economic and cultural rights, in an attempt to physically and culturally eradicate the entire community.

"The Indian population plummeted from 5 million at the end of the 15th century to 237,000 at the beginning of the 20th century, when many tribes were completely extinct," he noted.
He continued that since the beginning of last year, there has been shocking and distressing discovery of a large number of unnamed graves and remains of indigenous children in Canada, and the truth remains untold to this day.

Australia, he said, has in history pursued the notorious "White Australia Policy", under which 100,000 aboriginal children were forcibly taken away from their families, causing lifetime harm and trauma to the "stolen generation."

"Today, indigenous peoples are still subject to widespread and systemic discrimination and inequality in these countries, and are marginalized and left at the bottom of society politically, economically and culturally. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated their disadvantaged situation," he stressed.

He urged the United States, Canada and Australia to reflect seriously on their wrongdoings, immediately amend laws and change policies that violate indigenous peoples' rights, investigate the crimes and hold perpetrators accountable.

237,000 is questionable.

LOL! As you like to state over and over and over and over "you keeping talking about the past and not the present"

  • According to the 2010 US Census, approximately
5.2 million self-identified American Indian/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) live in the US, of whom 2 million qualify for federal services.

Let's see how it is in China:

"The Chinese government does not recognize the existence of “indigenous peoples” in the PRC despite voting in favour of the UNDRIP. The right to self-determination as “indigenous peoples” is thus not applicable and it results in a lack of legitimate institutions for indigenous group representation. The “minority nationalities” are socially marginalized in the Chinese context."

LOL! What does this have to do with Native Americans?

They don't speak Spanish in Venezuela because the US did something there...and besides 6'3" President Maduro is not even a Native American...even with his persistent Elizabeth Warren type low percent excuse.

It's a thread about US volation of human rights, not only about Indians.

I guess we are all misreading your thread title as you are going on a tangent in your own thread.

It's just the title of the top post, but I post all US human rights violations in this one thread, no need to open one for each, other wise there'll be thousands.

Yes, we know because every year when some issue pops up in China your respond by opening up a bunch...saying the same 400 year old Native American stuff over and over and over and over as if it is going to cause history to change.

You live in the past and not the present...but quickly criticize others when they do the same.

Everyone in China except Russians are indigenous people so there's no need for special recognition.
