The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), which is pioneering the search for the Higgs particle, would like to see more involvement of Indian industry, scientists and engineers during the course of future research, CERN director general Rolf Heuer said on Saturday.
Addressing the press after delivering the C V Raman Memorial Lecture at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Prof Heuer said India has a fantastic capacity to contribute to the ongoing search at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the Higgs, which gives fundamental particles their mass.
India is full of eager and well-educated young people. I would like to see more involvement of the Indian industry and scientists for fellowships, which is only possible when India becomes an associate member at CERN, Prof Heuer said.
He also emphasised on the quality of researchers from India. We have roughly more than 200 Indian scientists registered at CERN. We have more scientific researchers from India than China. I must say that the quality of your researchers is very high, Prof Heuer said.
What Next?
The $4.75 billion LHC was shut down on Thursday for maintenance work. It will be resumed again in 2015. The LHC, which Prof Heuer described as a super microscope and the largest refrigerator in the world, has been running since 2009.
