Centre for special children being set up in Lahore: CM

CHIEF Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that special children are as talented and gifted as normal children and the provision of proper education and training facilities can help make them useful citizens of society.

He said the Punjab government had taken a number of steps for the rehabilitation of special children and education and training facilities had been improved in institutions for special children. He said a centre of excellence for the rehabilitation of special children was being set up in the provincial metropolis where a 100-bed hospital and a research centre would also be established. He said an effective system of treatment and look after was essential for Down’s syndrome special children.


He expressed these views while addressing a function arranged for Down’s syndrome special children here Monday. The chief minister was presented a national flag and peace flag at the conclusion of the ceremony. The special children also gave an excellent performance through expression of their face and speech during the function. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister expressed his pleasure that such talented and beloved children of the nation were present in the hall where cabinet meetings and other government functions were held. He said special children were messengers and ambassadors of peace and there was a need for paying due attention to their care, rehabilitation, education and training.

He said the Punjab government had adopted an effective strategy for this purpose and education and training facilities had been improved in the centres for special children. Shahbaz Sharif said a number of buses had been provided to educational institutions for special children while talented special children had also been given laptops.

He said the government had not only constructed new institutions for training and education of special children but 37 computer labs had been set up while 99 special education centres had been upgraded from primary to middle level. He said that 36 centres for slow learners had been established in various districts while a training college had been set up in Lahore for the training of teachers for deaf and dumb children.

He said though Punjab government had taken a number of measures for the rehabilitation of special children, much was still to be done. He said it was time to resolve that every effort would be made for saving the children from Down’s syndrome and rehabilitation of such children. He set up a committee headed by Provincial Minister for Special Education and directed the committee to visit the institutions set up by a welfare trust for special children in different districts. He said the government would extend all-out assistance to these institutions working for the rehabilitation of special children in the light of recommendations of the committee.

Provincial Minister for Special Education Asif Saeed Manais while addressing the function said that Down’s syndrome special children had come out with the message of peace and they were welcomed in Lahore. He said the Punjab government was implementing an effective programme for the rehabilitation of special children and making them useful citizens of the society. He said there were 237 centres for special children in the province where Down’s syndrome special children were getting education.

He said the state-of-the-art centre to be set up for the rehabilitation of special children in Lahore would be a gift for such children. He said that besides provision of free books, uniform, transport, equipment and other facilities in these centres, the Punjab government was also giving them a monthly stipend of Rs 800. Chairman of a welfare trust, Jalal Akbar Dar said that international day of Down’s syndrome special children was observed on March 21 and a peace caravan of special children would also visit other cities for creating public awareness about the disease. He said the chief minister had done a lot for the rehabilitation, education and training of special children and by attending this ceremony he had won the hearts of special children and they were thankful to him.
