New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared the induction of the indigenous Akash surface to air missiles for the Army, giving its air defence corps much needed teeth to counter enemy aircraft and missiles. The indigenous system, which has already been inducted by the Air Force, will be used by the Army to protect key assets.

Negative. The barak 2 has a greater range. Although both are meant to be point defence sams. Besides, one is a naval sam and the other ground based. So why compare?
The Akash system is an awesome achievement with orders worth over 5 Billion dollars. But it does have room for improvement. In range, accuracy and response time. Thus the Akash Mk2 which is scheduled to fly by 2013

GR8 News!!! Akash is a huge success for DRDO. Army must induct it in large numbers as the AF has done. :victory:

why waste time on akash mk2 why not use time and money to convert aad and pad into SAMs:hitwall::hitwall::frown:

Your joking right? This is much more cost effective. Do you even know what the price difference between a prithvi interceptor and a akash missile is? Further, this is a natural evolution of the platform. We mustn't stop.
And btw, last time I checked the AAD and PAD WERE SAMs.

NO I'm not joking. we need long range SAMs having ranges of 150 to 200km:tup:)like china have (perhaps hq-9 or hq-19 with125km range but that are copies of s-300)these are installed on their newest destroyers also
can you provide link for aad and pad were SAMs (except Wikipedia)

You have not heard about Ashvin project ?/ DRDO has already a plan to build AAD after its success into a full fledged SAM system and its name is Ashvin.

Look in case missiles you cannot find an accurate information unless it is provided by the organisation or the company building it which is rare. you can find something in DRDO publication but PAD into SAM is not a wise decision. Prithvi is a bulky missile for this purpose. I think you can find something in DRDO's Jan 2010 publication.

The kinetic energy required to smash an IRBM is exponential times the energy required to bring down fighter jets. So akash will logically be less powerful than the PAD/AADs.
The bottom line is why waste 100m $$ missile to bring down a fighter which costs 70m $$. ?

yoohoo!where is ruby jack a*ss ?? I still remember his rant about Akash Sam ..
Awesum job Drdo ... :pleasantry:

Because it can cause alot more damage.
Also there are already plans to develop a SAM based on AAD.

Read my lines carefully dude ! What i said is, If a low cost missile can SMASH the aircraft, why the hell you need this "more damage" ?
And when they say based on AAD, they mean its guidance system and avionics etc. not the whole missile.

How many squadrons the Army is planning to buy???

I think airforce has bought 8 squadrons(1000 missiles)..

and what is the difference between Army's and Airforce's Akash??
