Six months after the Commonwealth Games scam fiasco, former Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi has finally been arrested. The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Kalmadi over financial irregularities in the Queen's Baton Relay in the CWG.
Meanwhile, the Congress suspended Kalmadi following his arrest in the Commonwealth Games scam case. The decision was taken by the disciplinary committee of the party.
The CBI on Monday questioned the Congress MP from Pune to clarify details before arresting him in connection with cases related to alleged irregularities in hiring AM Films and AM Car and Van Hire Limited during baton relay in London.
The CBI team had spoken the London-based owner of both the companies -- Ashish Patel -- who has given a lot of information and documents with regard to the allegedly overvalued deal.
The documents and records made available by Patel will be provided to the CBI officially in reply to their Letter Rogatory issued to British Authorities.
CBI sources said the agency now wants Kalmadi to reply to the new pieces of information on the monetary transactions with the two companies.
The CBI had already questioned Kalmadi earlier on the massive scam in the CWG and had also carried out searches at his homes and offices.
Kalmadi has also the backing of the Congress party. Congress sources say appropriate action will be taken at the appropriate time against Kalmadi.
Kalmadi will be produced in a Delhi court on Tuesday.
Minister of State for Sports Ajay Makan will also ask the IOA to remove Kalmadi and elect a new president in his place.
