Canadian legislators have unanimously voted to declare crimes committed against Rohingya Muslims by the Myanmar military to be genocide.

The House of Commons endorsed on Thursday the findings of a UN fact-finding mission on Myanmar that found "crimes against humanity have been committed against the Rohingya" and that these acts were sanctioned by top Myanmar military commanders.

In a motion, Canadian legislators said they "recognise that these crimes against the Rohingya constitute genocide".

Rights organisations have accused Myanmar military of committing extrajudicial killings, gang rape, and arson during their bloody campaign launched in August last year after army posts came under attack from Rohingya rebels.

More than 700,000 Rohingya people have forced to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh, where they now live in cramped refugee camps.

They also urged the UN Security Council to refer the case to the International Criminal Court (ICC), while also calling for Myanmar's generals to be investigated and prosecuted "for the crime of genocide".

"I want to underscore how tragic, how horrific the crimes against the Rohingya are," Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said. "We are leading an international effort for justice and accountability for the Rohingya."

'A significant milestone'
"Today's unanimous motion is a very important step in that effort."

Human rights observers called the declaration as a significant milestone.

The UN report published last month said military generals, including Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, must face investigation and prosecution for "genocidal intent" in Myanmar's northern Rakhine State, as well as crimes against humanity and other war crimes in the states of Kachin and Shan.

Myanmar denies any organised abuses.

Bangladesh and Myanmar signed an agreement last year to repatriate the Muslim minority - but it has stalled as the Rohingya fear to return to Myanmar's Rakhine State without their safety and rights guaranteed.

Time for International community to arrange regime change in Myanmar?
No. China is absolutelty right in supporting Myanmar against the plot to destablise this country by faking this 'genocide'. Rohingya is just economic migrants. Nothing more. I hope Pakistan and China show stand with Myanmar and sell Jf-Tunders so the country can defend itself against Indian evil designs.

I hope you're being sarcastic, there have been too may disturbing reports of deliberately wiping out Rohingya villages by Burmese Army accompanied by Buddhist monks.

What exactly is it that your smoking?

Look at the pictures. These are simple village people.

Secondly, I've spoken to physicians (non Bengali) who have been to the region for a medical mission.

The violence against the people were horrific.

What an utterly ridiculous post.

Canada participated in the Iraq war and was part of the coalition that invaded Afghanistan and Libya. Millions of Muslims have died in these wars.

Actually India supports Myanmar govt on it mostly. It has angered very many BD people (incl in this forum).

They (BD) are rushing more into the west/globalist/UN crowd regarding this as a result.

You can ask Burmese members here like @Aung Zaya . China, Pak and India are all largely on same side for this issue (I guess its rare but it does happen given large economic considerations w.r.t Myanmar opening up and reforming).

Other than that your post is spot on.

A iron friend's friend is a friend. A iron friend's enemy is a enemy. That iron friend is China !

Kind of a myopic view of things.

And ironic given your signature.

Either way, the previous post by @Nilgiri is correct in the sense that Bangladesh had no support in this at all.

India, China, Myanmar are all on the same page.

The truth is the real losers are the Rohingya people.

They have nothing to offer anyone and thus no one really cares.

Its ironic because IMO its precisely these people that need to be protected in the Islamic sense i.e. the oppressed and those treated unjustly.

Tell me now, what exactly did those old ladies and children do to deserve this?

As for your "Iron Brothers" emphasis.

That may be true in 2018 or for that matter 2030.

But in the end, know that there are no permanent friends or enemies (which I am sure you do given the impressive quality of your other posts)

There are no inherent ties that bind China and Pakistan other than the current state of geopolitics.

Principles on the other hand are immutable.

We all know that the real world is by and large driven by everything but principles.

But in the divine sense, if you stand for prayer and call yourself a Muslim, I can't see how you can support injustice against the Rohingya.

Canada doesn't have capability to lead a war in Myanmar. US hates Muslims and will certainly not join in. Best they can do is throw some sanctions at Myanmar

Actually he wants to display Pakistan's love for China. So he decides to hide facts which are all too obvious.

Yes, they are facts but there's a bigger fact troubling the soul of uncle sam. So it will be reckless for China to continue on the present track in Burma.
