We are the land of ‘unnees-bees’, sundar-sasta-tikaoo and jugaad and it is not something to feel proud about. In fact, the lack of quality in India is shameful and it may soon prove to be dangerous and hurtful too.
During AIMCON, a two-day conference organized by Army and CII, Vice chief of Army staff, Lt. Gen. Sarath Chand said that Pakistan’s defence industrial base and export is better than India.
He also showed concerns about ordnance factories, “There is little or no research and development. We do not even have the capability of absorbing the industry through transfer of technology, and in some cases we have even failed to assemble products that have been imported from abroad. It is very hard to see ordnance factories changing in the present state. Overall, it has become an unsuccessful method of supporting our defence requirements”.
He noted that having indigenous industrial capability is very crucial for the country. He further cautioned that in an event of a war, one will have to look abroad for sustenance. And very often, friends have, in the past, let us down whenever the chips have been down.
Even though India has cooked up some indigenous defence equipment almost all of them have used non-innovative technology. India still adopts technology from other countries instead of researching and developing her own. A large piece of equipment that India made, indigenously, was ‘MBT (Main Battle Tank) Arjun ’ which turned out to be the white elephant that is still standing ignored in the room. What we mean is, it is widely agreed that it is not on par with MBTs used by other countries.
There is no need to feel surprised though. If a nation of 1.34 billion cannot put together a team of 11 players to represent us in international football then, for sure, we cannot put together a decent battle tank to keep us safe in case of war.
It is worth noticing that ISRO’s total budget is just a wee bit more than the amount allocated to defence research and development. Still ISRO has made world class innovations and has set examples for developed nations, but defence R&D is still dependent on copying instead of developing. The question that one should ask but does not, is: in spite of being one of the fastest developing economies, India is still dependent upon Russia or America for her defence requirements…Why?
There is nothing we can do except read articles like this and share it so many more will ask the questions we have raised here because if Pakistan really has a better defence industrial base than India, then one can imagine the capability of China on the same parameter?
It’s time that we listen to our army and understand where we stand. Or we might be left with Arnab Goswamy as our only innovation capable of delivering some pain, in case China decides to attack us.

Arjun Mk II, a tank that is going through a decade long cycle of development and proving.
