Dhaka, Nov 22 (bdnews24.com)British Prime Minister David Cameron has written to Sheikh Hasina pitching for a UK company to get the job to develop Mongla port, says a senior British High Commission official.
"Port Evo wants to develop Mongla port with an investment of $850 million and we are hopeful about getting the work," Acting British High Commissioner Nick Low told bdnews24.com on Thursday.
.
Port Evo has operations in Europe and other parts of the world, he said after a press briefing at the official residence of the High Commissioner at Baridhara.
The United Arab Emirates recently also sent a letter to the government expressing its interest in a project to modernise Bangladesh's second biggest sea port in Mongla.
"There are many stakeholders in the projects and we are working with different government agencies," Low added.
Mongla port handled 2.7 million tonnes of cargoes in 2010-11.
New visa system
Low in the press conference said the new visa system introduced recently was not Bangladesh-specific and that it was rather a global initiative.
UK Border Agency recently announced that financial statements from 14 financial institutions would only be accepted when applying for visa under points-based system.
"The rumour is totally rubbish that Britain does not have any confidence in Bangladesh banking system and that's why it introduced the new system," he said.
The UK has full confidence in the banking system and it is a global initiative, he added.
"It was first introduced in India."
The High Commission is working with the non-compliant banks so that they could be upgraded to 'white list', Low said.
