Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis have finalised a deal in Athens in which Bulgaria bought a 20% stake in the LNG terminal near Alexandroupoli.
The deal has been in preparation for more than a year.
At the same time, Greek companies are building a new gas pipe between the two countries, which will also serve the terminal.
These two projects are of strategic importance for Bulgaria’s gas diversification and are key to relations with the United States. Through the terminal in Alexandroupoli, Bulgaria will have the opportunity to increase its imports of US liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as gas from other sources in the Mediterranean.
