Build on Indonesian Navy's Second PKR 10514 Frigate to Start in Next 3 Months









In accordance with the agreed planning in the contract for the construction of a Damen SIGMA Frigate for the Indonesian Navy, the keellaying ceremony has taken place on 16 April 2014 at the PT PAL (Persero) Shipyard in Surabaya, Indonesia.The construction of the 4 modules that are going to be built at PT PAL (Persero) Shipyard Surabaya and the two modules that are being built in Vlissingen, are proceeding according to schedule.The construction and testing of the modules simultaneously at two different locations signifies the unique Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding modular building strategy that is unparalleled in the naval shipbuilding industry. All modules will be assembled at the PT PAL (Persero) Shipyard under main contractorship of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding followed by Harbour Acceptance Tests and Sea Acceptance Trials.

Furthermore, the progress for the second SIGMA 10514 PKR frigate, for which the contract was signed 14 February 2013, proceeds as scheduled and construction is foreseen to start in approximately 3 months.
Expanding Indonesian Navy
The acquisition of the SIGMA 10514 PKR Frigate is part of the further modernization and expansion of the Indonesian Navy, TNI-AL. The main missions and tasks of the SIGMA PKR 10514 will be in the domains of naval warfare as well as Maritime Security missions and tasks. Also, the ship may be used for humanitarian support tasks.

SIGMA 10514

On the 16 August 2010, Indonesia Defense Department, signed a deal with PT PAL Indonesia and Damen Schelde to build a 105 meters frigate in Indonesia based on Damen Schelde Sigma 10514 design. The first hull only will be equiped with guns (without major weapons) and the second hull is complete with the major weapons [and sensors]. Though the Indonesian Navy announced that it will build two destroyer escorts referring to the SIGMA 10514. On the Indo Defence 2012 exposition a model was revealed showing the Phalanx and ASW mortar replaced by a single 35 mm Oerlikon Millennium gun, also the 76mm had a stealth cupola. Some reported that the VLS missiles will be Aster 15 instead of Mica, due to these changes the ships role also changed from ASW to AAW.

On February 1, 2013 it was announced that a second unit will be build by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and PT PAL Surabaya, the second contract includes torpedo tubes, combat control room and a couple of surface weapons.

That would seem logical: there are 3 Dutch built Fatahillah class and 6 ex-Dutch Van Speijk class ships nearing the end of their service lives.

Nope, Fatahillah class is just reaching their mid life (20 so years) they will be MLU ed, and as far as i know the plan from the Navy is to replace Van Speijk with more larger ship not with SIGMA class Frigate.

And SIGMA class programme is Navy efforts to expand their fleet (in number), and using them as workhorse platform (patrol mission, humanitarian SAR, relief efforts, Combat duty, and so on), the license we get is numbering about 20 ships.

You could be right about a 20 ship program, as there are eventually also 16 ex-DDR ships to replace (Kapitan Patimura Class). These Parchim class corvettes (Soviet designation Project 133) were developed for the East German Navy in the late 1970s, and built by the Wolgast Peene-Werft 1985-1989. They are now 25-29 years old.

Upon completion in December 2016, the first of the two ordered frigates under a $220m contract will provide the navy with its largest domestically built warship.
