RANCHI: Three people including pilot, co-pilot and a technical staff of Border Security Force (BSF) died when a helicopter crashed on Wednesday morning in the jungles near Ranchi-Khunti border.

The chopper crashed at around 9 am and all the three people on board died. The chopper crashed around 20 minutes after taking off from Birsa Munda airport here.

Confirming the crash and death of the of three BSF personnel Jharkhand Police spokesperson IG RK Mallik said that the chopper crashed due to some technical fault. "The Dhurv helicopter took off from the airport at around 8.40 am for Chaibasa and after few minutes it crashed in the jungle. All the persons on board died," said Mallik.

However, he ruled out the possibility of any Maoist attack on the chopper as it was flying at around 3,500 to 4,000 feet above the ground. "The chopper was at such a height that it could not be targeted by Maoists. It must have developed some technical snag and crashed in the jungles," said Mallik adding that the exact reason will become clear only after experts complete their inquiry.

Since the helicopter crashed deep inside the jungle there was no chance of any civilian casualty.

BSF chopper deputed for occasional cas-evacs and routine transporter of bureaucrats and politicians in the fight against the Naxals!
They(BSF) even have four Mi8's too but they can't maintain them so just one is flying and the others are rusting in their hangars!

Dhruv choppers grounded after crash
Ranchi, Oct 20 (IANS)
The Dhruv helicopters, used by para military forces, have been grounded after a Border Security Force (BSF) chopper crashed on the outskirts of Ranchi Wednesday, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Inspector General of Police D.K. Pandey said Thursday.
'As per my information, the Dhruv choppers have been grounded in the country after a BSF chopper crashed Wednesday,' Pandey told IANS.

'The Dhruv chopper services will be decided after the DGCA completes its inquiry.'

A BSF helicopter crashed in a forested area near the Jharkhand capital Wednesday, killing all three people on board: pilot S.P. Singh, co-pilot K.B. Thomas and technician Manoj Swain.

A DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) team has started its probe.

Civil aviation sources do not rule out the possibility of Maoist involvement in the crash.

'Normally the chopper remains in contact with ATC up to 25 nautical miles. The Dhruv chopper lost contact with ATC after 10 nautical miles. Sound was heard in the air after which the chopper crashed,' a civil aviation official told IANS.

'The possibility of Maoist involvement could not be ruled out,' he said. 'If the chopper developed a snag, why did the pilots not inform ATC?'

The Jharkhand police has, however, ruled out any such possibility.

Talking to IANS after the crash, Jharkhand DGP G.S. Rath said: 'There is no possibility of Maoist involvement in the incident. The DGCA will probe the incident. The chopper was regularly used for anti-Maoist operation. Technical fault seems to be the reason.'

I am sure it is the Maoist scum. Most of the time this government protects these bloody terrorists. It is a proven fact. Gosh I can't wait for 2014 and Modi!

May the valiants find eternal peace in the hereafter. They shall always be remembered for their work.

DGCA enquiry revealed that crash occured due to spatial disorientation of pilots leading to a rapid turn which was caused due to activation of Tail Gear box Hot warning.
The rapid turn caused excessive airframe stress causing damage to tail rotor leading to the helicopter crash.

TGB Hot warning is believed to have got activated due to fault in the electrical wiring/looming of the helicopter.
