KOLKATA: The three-day long first biennial regional level meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) concluded in Dhaka on Saturday with delegations from both sides discussing key issues such as movement of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), cattle smuggling, illegal migration and human trafficking.
The Indian side comprised 22 officers headed by Santosh Mehra, inspector general, South Bengal Frontier, BSF. The Bangladeshi delegation, led by Brig Gen Feroz Rahim, Rangpur Regional Commander, consisted of 16 other officers from the BGB, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign.
"The conference was held in the right spirit with the BGB delegation paying keen attention to our concerns regarding the smuggling of FICN and crimes along the international border. Even the Bangladeshi authorities are facing problems due to the circulation of fake currency. The region is also under international glare for human trafficking. The Bangladeshi authorities understand this and are keen to take appropriate steps. These are important developments, so far as India is concerned.
A series of Confidence Building Measures were also discussed. Earlier, this conference was known as the IsG BSF - DDG Border Guard Bangladesh level conference. After the creation of the regional headquarters in BGB, it has been renamed the IsG BSF - BGB Regional Commander level conference," a senior BSF officer said.
After the conference, the BSF and BGB delegations jointly inaugurated a fountain at the main gate of the BGB's Rajshahi sector headquarters. The BSF delegation also interacted with the director general, BGB, at its headquarters in Dhaka and discussed several issues.
"Both forces agreed to work jointly to resolve all border-related issues. The BSF delegation had entered Bangladesh via Malda. On the way back, it returned through Benapole/Petrapole in North 24-Parganas. The motto of the conference was better co-ordination between the two border guarding forces," the officer added.
